August 12, 2024
1) National Night Out Block Party 2) CM Palmisano with Inspector Nelson, Commander Hanson, and Emily Osterberg
Dear Neighbor,
It’s been a busy and exciting week for our community! I spent the week hosting my own National Night Out party and attending a handful of the 300+ block parties in the 13th Ward, participating in a CD5 Town Hall with the Congresswoman, hosting a 13th Ward Town Hall at Walker Methodist Place, and meeting with Public Works Director Tim Sexton, Metro Transit, and business owners at 43rd and Upton. Over the weekend, I took my neighbor, Cathy, to the Early Vote Center. She is out of town on a work trip this week but wanted to make sure she cast her vote in tomorrow's primary election! It was a smooth, fast, and fun experience.
I hope you've taken advantage of this nice weather and opportunity to spend time with your neighbors, too. See you at the polls!
Tomorrow, August 13th, is our Primary Day! Please vote at your polling places between 7:00am to 8:00pm, none of the ones in our ward have changed since the last election. If you'd like to double-check the location of their polling place: Find your polling place on the Minnesota secretary of state website.
Voting Early
Busy tomorrow? Today you can still vote early 7:00am to 5:00pm at the Early Vote Center, 980 E. Hennepin Ave. This is available on a walk-in basis.
Still Need to Return Your Mail-In Ballot?
All mail-in ballots need to be received by August 13 to count. The City recommends returning mail ballots in person to avoid a late delivery. Ballots can be dropped off during regular business hours at Minneapolis Election & Voter Services, 980 E. Hennepin Ave., or at the Hennepin County Government Center, 300 Sixth St. S. On Election Day, August 13, completed mail ballots will be accepted until 8 p.m. Mail-in ballots cannot be turned in to polling places.
Last week, Public Works crews backfilled the second access pit at the intersection. Today, the two access pits will be paved over to restore the pavement. On Wednesday, the intersection at 44th and Beard will be reopened and restored to normal traffic conditions.
Please note that the partial lane closures along 44th street at other locations will remain in place.
The Federal Aviation Administration will hold two public webinars to present information and take questions on new procedures in the works for the MSP Airport. The FAA is implementing GPS-based navigation instead of ground-based navigation as a part of modernizing the national airspace.
GPS-based procedures are seen as safer and more efficient, adding precision to flight paths, but they also have the potential to change flight patterns and the experience of sound from those of us at ground-level.
The City Trees program is offering $30 trees now through Sept. 30. Minneapolis residents and property owners can purchase up to three trees per address. Choose from shade trees, fruit trees, flowering trees and evergreen trees.
Benefits of Trees
Trees provide shade, lower utility bills, increase property value, clean the air, collect stormwater, provide habitat for wildlife, and improve mental health and well-being.
Since the program began in 2006, the City Trees program has provided more than 20,000 low-cost trees for planting on private property, with 7,500 trees distributed in the last five years.
Businesses, nonprofits, organizations, and owners of properties with five or more units can also purchase $30 trees. Submit an application before Sept. 15.

One of the best parts of my job is getting to meet with my constituents, learn more about you and hear your questions, concerns, hopes and dreams for our shared community.
If you'd like to schedule a time to meet with me, send me an e-mailand my staff will help get it scheduled. Please let me know what you'd like to talk about and a convenient place to meet—a coffee shop, a park, your home, my office, etc. I try to reserve Fridays for constituent meetings, but can work them in other times, as necessary, too.
