Fatal crash involving motorcycle and State Patrol being investigated by MPD

June 21, 2024 (Minneapolis): Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said that at approximately 4:00 P.M. on June 14th, Minneapolis Police Traffic Investigators responded to Cedar Ave near 51st St E to assist the Minnesota State Patrol with a crash investigation at their request.

Preliminary information indicates that on June 14th, troopers from the Minnesota State Patrol were in pursuit of a motorcycle. They terminated the pursuit once the motorcycle left the highway but kept visual contact with the motorcycle via the State Patrol’s helicopter. Despite no longer being pursued, the motorcycle struck a fully marked State Patrol vehicle.

The rider of the motorcycle was identified as a man in his mid-20’s. He was transported from the scene to HCMC with potentially life-threatening injuries. Today, the Hennepin County Medical Examiner notified MPD that the man has died from his injuries. The Medical Examiner will release the name of the man along with the cause and manner of death.

Because the crash occurred on Minneapolis city streets, the Minneapolis Police Traffic Division will be the lead agency in the investigation, with assistance from the Minnesota State Patrol. MPD will be leading the crash investigation, and MSP will be handling the pursuit.

The GO Number for this incident is 24-161828.
