A Message from CM Aurin Chowdhury

Dear Neighbors,

I write to you with a heavy heart. On Thursday, May 30, 2024 as you may already know there was a shooting that Minneapolis police officers responded to on the 2200 block of Blaisdell Ave. My prayers are with the victims of this tragic shooting.

One of our own city servants, Officer Jamal Mitchell was killed on duty. He was a father, fiancé, friend, and beloved by many especially those he worked side by side with. My heart goes out to him, his family, and loved ones. Everyone deserves to return safely home to their families and I heartbroken is no longer able to do that. I thank him for his valiant service to our city and community, it will not be forgotten.

It was confirmed that two civilians have been killed, including the suspect. Osman Said Jimale, was a 32 year old man who was one of the victims and lost his life on May 30, 2023. Several other victims sustained injuries that were non-life threatening and have received care.

As a Council Member I stand fully behind the victims, their families, and the residents of Whittier who where harmed. Gun violence is an epidemic in our nation and shootings like this are traumatic and has reverberating and lasting impacts on those who experience them. I am going to work with fellow Council Members to extend supportive resources impacted families and residents on this difficult time.

On Thursday night, I joined my fellow Council Members, Mayor Frey, Governor Walz, and MPD & BCA leadership for a press conference to provide an update on the situation, which you can watch here.

I will be receiving updates from the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), the agency conducting ongoing investigations. I will share updates on my newsletter as we learn more.

In Community,

CM Aurin Chowdhury
