Lifeline Awareness Week: Connecting Minnesotans to essential resources
ST. PAUL, Minn. – The ability to connect with local resources and emergency services is more than a convenience, it's a lifeline. This is the message from state regulators as the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (PUC) joins the nation in observing "Digital Connectivity and Lifeline Awareness Week," September 7-13, 2025. The goal is to encourage all Minnesotans to stay connected and ensure that those who need affordable voice and broadband services can access them through the federal Lifeline program.
The Lifeline program plays a critical role in bridging the digital divide, helping low-income consumers access the communications networks essential for finding jobs, accessing healthcare, connecting with family, and calling for help in an emergency. Under the federal program, qualifying low-income consumers can receive a discount of up to $9.25 per month for broadband, or bundled phone and broadband service. For voice-only service, the discount is up to $5.25 per month, and residents of qualifying Tribal lands can receive up to a total of $34.25 per month. Eligibility and program rules can be found at www.lifelinesupport.org.
While 81,200 Minnesotans are currently enrolled in the Lifeline program, an estimated 420,000 are eligible. The PUC is committed to reaching these residents and ensuring they have the connectivity they need to thrive.
"Our mission at the PUC is to ensure all Minnesotans have access to safe, reliable, and affordable utility services," said PUC Commissioner Audrey Partridge. "The Lifeline program is about more than just a phone or internet connection, it’s about ensuring our most vulnerable citizens can access essential services, stay in touch with loved ones, and improve their quality of life. During Digital Connectivity and Lifeline Awareness Week, we urge every Minnesotan to help us spread the word and connect someone with this vital resource. A single call can make a world of difference."
Individuals can apply online at nv.fcc.gov, mail an application by requesting or downloading a copy from www.lifelinesupport.org, or contact a local participating telecommunications provider.
The PUC is the state agency responsible for regulating the rates and services of telecommunications companies in Minnesota. For assistance with the Lifeline program, residents can contact the PUC's Consumer Affairs Office at 800-657-3782 or email consumer.puc@state.mn.us. The PUC staff have resources available to assist non-English speaking consumers.
