Minnesota Public Utilities Commission revisits Magellan Pipeline – orders additional analysis and tribal engagement
St. Paul, Minn. – The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission rescinded their previous decision to grant a route permit for the Magellan Pipeline Reroute Project in Pipestone County.
On Thursday, the Commission required the company to complete cultural, archaeological, and historical resources inventories for Route Alternative 1 and Route Alternative 3. The inventory requires both review of documents and field assessment. The decision also includes coordination with 15 Tribal Nations and entities: Brave Heart Society, Cheyenne River Sioux, Flandreau Santee Sioux, Lower Brule Sioux, Lower Sioux Indian Community, Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe, Otoe-Missouria, Prairie Island Indian Community, Rosebud Sioux, Santee Sioux, Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux, Standing Rock Sioux, Upper Sioux Community, White Earth Band of Minnesota Chippewa, and Yankton Sioux.
The company must file a compliance document after completing the inventories and allow all tribes to review the findings. This filing must include the inventory results, any feedback received, and a certification that coordination with Tribal Nations and communities has been attempted and/or completed. Once the Commission receives the compliance filing, it will schedule the matter for further consideration.
