Dear District 6 neighbors,
As details emerge from the horrific shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis this morning, my heart is with the students, families, staff, and the broader community.
There are no words to describe the level of tragedy that has occurred today: two children (ages 8 and 10) have been shot and killed. Two families received the worst possible news after dropping off their kids this morning. Authorities also report that 17 people, including 14 children, were injured. The pain of this deliberate act of violence against children is incomprehensible.
As staff at HCMC and Children’s Hospital work to stabilize victims, we also acknowledge the heavy toll mass casualty events take on medical staff. I am deeply grateful for their dedication to this life-saving work. This is the second mass casualty event caused by gun violence in Hennepin County in the last 24 hours.
This violence occurred in a place where children should be safe. Today was only their second day of school. It is clear that the trauma of this moment will last long past today.
I am grateful to first responders and law enforcement, including the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office and Hennepin EMS, for their swift response.
Now is a time for us to support the Annunciation School community, their families, and the surrounding neighborhood. I encourage everyone to find a way to help that is meaningful and be kind to one another.
Please take care of yourselves today.
