Today Hennepin County Administrator David Hough announced that he will be retiring from his role as Administrator on July 31, 2025. Hough will shift into a phased retirement position, serving in an advisory and special projects capacity beginning August 1, 2025.
Hough assumed the role of Deputy County Administrator in 2008 and accepted the position of County Administrator in 2013. Prior to those roles, he worked in the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office serving in several areas, including Managing Attorney of the Civil Division, Attorney to the County Board, and as the County Attorney’s Civil Deputy.
Hough said, “After more than 40 years here, this was not an easy decision, but I am beyond proud of our accomplishments and the significant difference we’ve made in people’s lives. I am grateful to the County Board and all our dedicated employees in this great organization. In my new role, I will remain committed to our employees and the residents of Hennepin County, as we continue the life-changing work that needs to be done."
Hennepin County Board Chair Irene Fernando said, “We are beyond grateful for David Hough’s innovative, steadfast, and unwavering leadership. He has led this organization through some of the most challenging times with dedication, vision, and compassion. David has made an impact locally, regionally, and nationally. We are incredibly appreciative for his service over the last four decades, as well as his continued contribution to Hennepin County’s mission through phased retirement. In the coming weeks, the Hennepin County Board will engage in a process to select a new County Administrator who will lead us into the future with the drive for leadership and excellence that is needed to meet today’s moment. Hennepin County remains steadfast in our values and our commitment to serving residents.”
Hennepin County is the largest county in the State of Minnesota, with a population of nearly 1.3 million people. Hennepin is the thirty-fourth largest by population out of 3,100 counties in the United States.
