🗳 Hennepin Approves $1.3 million for Voter Education, Registration, and Outreach

Voter Access BAR

This week Hennepin County approved $1.3 million in federal funding for eligible costs, operations, and services to generate and implement efforts for voter education, registration, and outreach. This is a timely investment at a critical moment for our democracy.

Our government works because our elections work. If every jurisdiction in our nation ran elections like Hennepin County, our democracy would be in much better shape. We must continue to be a beacon, even as we seek to improve.  As a former school board member I'm especially excited about the potential for these funds to improve voter information about the process, reduce barriers, and potentially increase voter participation in what are typically lower turnout municipal and school board elections.

🏠 Now accepting applications for new Lived Expertise Advisory Group

Housing graphic

The Hennepin Continuum of Care is seeking members to form a Lived Expertise Advisory Group (LEAG) to inform funding decisions for outreach, shelter, and housing activities. The committee will be made up of 5-7 members who have experienced homelessness and are passionate about developing solutions. The goal of the LEAG is to ensure that people who have experienced homelessness, particularly members of the Black, Indigenous, and People of Color communities (BIPOC), are at the table with funders to make funding decisions and to ensure that the work towards ending homelessness happens with the voice of people with lived expertise.

Compensation and time commitment

Compensation: LEAG members will be compensated with a stipend of $20 per hour with a maximum of $200 per month. We can work with and accommodate individuals that have income restrictions to ensure this compensation doesn’t conflict with other benefits.

Time commitment: The total time commitment for LEAG members will not exceed 10 hours per month. Members can expect to participate in 2- 4 hours of meetings per month and up to  4 - 6 hours of additional time outside of meetings to attend training, review proposals, or complete other duties as needed.

Submit your application

We highly encourage anyone who has experienced homelessness or has lived fragilely housed (shelter, couch-surfing, car, outside) to apply. If you have experience navigating human/social service systems while experiencing housing instability, we want to hear from you. Please share this application with anyone who would be a good fit. Applications need to be submitted by August 20.

🤝 Wayzata State of the City and Night to Unite Luncheon

Wayzata State of the City and Night to Unite Luncheon

This week I joined the City of Wayzata, Mayor Mouton, and the Wayzata Chamber of Commerce for their State of the City & Night to Unite Luncheon.

I was especially encouraged by interim Police Chief Marc Schultz's focus on the intersections between public safety and mental health and the expansion of Hennepin’s embedded social worker program in partnership with the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office, Wayzata Police Department, and other local departments.
