Reviews of peer recovery support documentation to begin Jan. 1, 2026

Beginning Jan. 1, 2026, recovery community organizations and substance use disorder treatment programs enrolled with Minnesota Health Care Programs (MHCP) will have up to 10% of their peer recovery support service claims reviewed for fee-for-service and behavioral health funded individuals. The implementation of this initiative is based on the requirement established in Minnesota Statutes 254B.05, Subd. 1(d) and Subd. 5(l) & (m).

Behavioral Health Administration (BHA) and the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) has contracted with Acentra Health to complete these reviews. Acentra will initiate post-payment reviews of peer recovery support documentation for medical necessity and to ensure provider notes reflect the need for peer services. Acentra will begin reviewing documentation from claims submitted beginning December 2025 and onward.

To submit the documentation requested to support selected claims, MHCP enrolled providers must register with Acentra’s Atrezzo portal. Acentra will provide training to support providers with portal registration, submission timelines, import processes and required documentation. A training session on will be offered on Nov. 7, 2025, from 10 – 11 a.m. Registration is required. A second portal training will be scheduled for mid-December, with additional sessions offered throughout 2026.

To better understand Acentra’s role in the Peer Recovery Support Specialist (PRSS) review process, Acentra is offering additional training on the requirements for submissions. The training will focus on the required elements for documentation and what might raise concerns over possible excessive billing practices, triggering a referral to the DHS Program Integrity Oversight Division (PIO).

Registration is required. These are identical trainings; you need to choose only one. Click on the following links to register.
