Tree ID Walk - Appleton

Event Type: Workshop/Training 

Join Georges River Land Trust and Maine Forest Service for an exploration of Appleton Preserve. Maine Forest Service District Forester Allyssa Gregory will lead tree identification on this guided hike. Participants will learn to identify tree species by looking at form, branching arrangement, buds, bark, and present foliage. Woodland appreciators should leave with a knowledge of Maine's native trees, practical tree identification skills, and insights into forest stewardship. Wear comfortable closed-toed shoes and bring your insect repellent of choice. Join us for a guided tree identification walk! 

Directions & Parking: From the intersection of Routes 131 and 105 in Appleton, go east on Route 105 for mile. Parking is available at the ME Inland Fisheries & Wildlife gravel lot on the right, just before the bridge across the Georges River. Please do not park in the Blue Crow Studio driveway or use it as a turnaround!

Invasive Plant Educational Workshop - Houlton

Participants will learn about Invasive plant biology, ecological impacts, identification, fundamental concepts of invasive plant management and related state and federal programs in classroom and field settings. 

Each participant will receive an Invasive Plant Field Guide and lunch 

(Outdoor Identification sessions will be held rain or shine, so plan accordingly.)

USDA Invests $80 Million to Expand Timber Markets, Protect Forests, Fuel Economic Growth

Today, the Secretary of Agriculture announced the award of $80 million to 189 projects under the Wood Innovations, Community Wood, and Wood Products Infrastructure Assistance grant programs.   The agency is investing in 189 projects from for-profit entities, state and local governments, Tribes, communities, non-profit organizations, and other partners. Funded proposals foster innovation and create new markets for wood products and energy, which are critical to the sustainable management of federal, tribal, state, and privately managed lands.  They also support wood energy projects and strengthen wood products processing and manufacturing capacity.  Funding comes from annual agency appropriations, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act.

Whole Trees and Ashland Logging Museum Tour

Date: Friday, August 1, 2025

Location: Whole Trees, Ashland, ME 

Topics and Presenters: Join MESAF for a Whole Trees Structures facility tour and a picnic at the Ashland Logging Museum. Whole Trees specializes in designing, engineering, and fabricating structural systems using round timber sourced from sustainably managed forests. After the tour, we’ll gather at the picnic pavilion of the Ashland Logging Museum for lunch. Participants are encouraged to explore the museum independently, relax on the lawn, and immerse themselves in the rich history of northern Maine logging stories shared by the on-site museum curator. 

Continuing Education Credits:  6 Category 1 

Cost: $20 for SAF members, $40 for non-members

A Tour at Blue Hill Heritage Trust

Date: Friday, August 22, 2025

Location: Blue Hill Heritage Trust, Surry, ME 

Topics and Presenters: Spend a day with Blue Hill Heritage Trust’s Conservation Forester, JW Harriman, on BHHT’s two 2,000+ acre properties in Ellsworth and Surry, where the team will be presenting on the Trust’s ongoing management for multi-use recreation land and water conservation, and forest resilience on the Blue Hill Peninsula. Lunch will be provided!
