COUNCIL MEMBERS BRIEFED ON LAUNCH OF HEALTH ATLAS PROJECT
Additionally, on Tuesday, April 28, Council Members, sitting as the Committee of the Whole, were briefed on the county’s new Health Atlas currently in development. Dr. Madeleine Shea, with Health Management Associates, and Shaquan Smith, with M-NCPPC, told Council Members that development of the Health Atlas began in March. The project centers around six pillars: health care access, healthy food access, jobs and workforce development, transportation and mobility, environment, and equity and wellbeing. A Council resolution, CR-54-2025, proposed by Chair Krystal Oriadha (District 7) last year directed the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission and the Prince George’s County Health Department to work together to create the Health Atlas, which will contain prior land use decisions and current public health data to better inform future legislation and development in the county. Developers of the Health Atlas plan to hold community listening sessions in June before launching the online platform in August.

COUNCIL MEMBER BLEGAY INTRODUCES LEGISLATION TO INCREASE SUPPORT FOR FIBROIDS PATIENTS
Aiming to increase support for fibroids patients, while expanding access to education, early screening, and treatment options in the county, Council Member Wala Blegay (At-Large) introduced three pieces of legislation on Tuesday, April 28. Fibroids have a significant impact on women’s health, particularly Black women, who face higher rates of fibroid development and more severe symptoms. Research published by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology shows that uterine fibroids are the most common benign gynecologic tumors, with more than 80% of African American women and approximately 70% of white women developing fibroids by age 50. Early detection, improved access to specialists, and culturally competent outreach are central components of Council Member Blegay’s bill and two resolutions. CB-36-2026 would provide reasonable work accommodations for county employees or contractors experiencing severe menstrual or uterine fibroid-related symptoms, including increased remote work days or more flexible leave policies. CR-30-2026 would launch a comprehensive fibroid educational outreach and care campaign in partnership with the Prince George’s County Health Department. CR-31-2026 would encourage the State of Maryland and the federal government to increase funding for fibroid research, improve insurance coverage for fibroid treatments, and expand reproductive healthcare access.
