TEEN CURFEW IMPLEMENTED TO ENHANCE PUBLIC SAFETY
Council Chair Jolene Ivey (District 5), Council Member Edward Burroughs (District 8), At-Large Council Member Calvin Hawkins, and other top County leaders joined County Executive Angela Alsobrooks as she announced an executive order instating a juvenile weekend curfew at National Harbor. The curfew, which began on Friday, April 26th, is for unaccompanied minors 16 and younger and lasts from 5 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The curfew comes after police reported hundreds of unaccompanied teens and children as young as 8-years-old at National Harbor the weekend prior, some of whom were involved in fighting and shoplifting. This curfew announced by the County Executive will be in effect while CB-29-2024, which would allow juvenile curfew zones to be created in commercial areas, is being considered by Council. The bill, sponsored by Council Member Burroughs, passed Committee of the Whole on Tuesday, April 23rd, and will be introduced on Tuesday, April 30th. “We thank the County Executive for putting this emergency measure in place as the Council’s curfew bill proceeds through the legislative process,” said Chair Ivey. “That legislation is not specific to National Harbor and will cover commercial areas in the County where a curfew is needed and approved by a council member and the police chief. We want to make sure we’re in partnership with the business community, law enforcement, and the residents of our County who have all been strong supporters of these measures.” For details on the County Executive’s curfew order, Click Here.

Both measures are now moving through the legislative process.
