And the shot is good! Registration for Montgomery County Recreation's winter youth basketball program is underway. These leagues provide a rich environment to foster development of basketball techniques and advance skills in discipline, sportsmanship, teamwork and more.
From instructional clinics to games, young basketball players of all levels will find something to enjoy. Last year, our youth basketball leagues had more than 5,700 participants and 600 coaches, with games and practices held across 125 locations throughout the County.
Montgomery County Recreation is also looking for adult volunteers to coach. The Department is seeking coaches who are knowledgeable about basketball rules and strategies, demonstrate strong character and patience and are passionate about helping kids learn and grow. All volunteers must complete a background check and fingerprinting. Recreation is also searching for officials ages 16 and older with availability on weekends. Training is provided.
Participants can engage in a wide array of activities from fitness, arts and more during Active Aging Week at our MoCoRec centers.

Sometimes a trip is less about a destination and more about the people you meet along the way.
CJ Jones brings more than just skill behind the wheel to every Eyre Bus trip -- he also brings heart.
Known for his upbeat attitude, CJ has been a valued member of Eyre Bus for 29 years and has worked with Montgomery County Recreation’s popular Trips and Tours programs for the past five years to help transport County residents to incredible, diverse locations across the Mid-Atlantic region. These daytrips include excursions to concerts, historical sites, scenic seasonal tours and more.
A typical day for CJ starts early in the morning with a vehicle inspection and safety check before greeting participants as they board. During the drive, CJ will share important information with travelers, including details on traffic, estimated arrival time and fun details about their upcoming destination. He then helps residents unwind with a safe ride home after a long day of adventure with stories and laughter.
No matter the trip, CJ said it's the smiles and positive energy of his passengers that make every trip worthwhile and these small moments have helped him stay energized throughout his successful career.
When he’s off the road, CJ can often be found singing with his church band, which helps keep him grounded during hectic work schedules.
While he provides transportation for County residents, it's his positive demeanor and his ability to connect with others that truly helps build community in Montgomery County.
