Comptroller's Work Group on Pandemic Spending to Hold First Meeting Thursday

Deputy budget secretary to outline how state and federal COVID-19 relief money is being used

WHO:

Comptroller Peter Franchot
Deputy Comptroller Sharonne Bonardi
Sandra Zinck, Director, General Accounting Division
Daniel C. Riley, Jr., Director, Compliance Division
Andrew Schaufele, Director, Bureau of Revenue Estimates
David Hildebrand, Director, Office of Risk Management

WHAT:

The Comptroller's Workgroup on Pandemic Spending will hold its first meeting on Thursday, May 20, at 1:30 p.m. to begin its review of state and federal COVID-related spending.

Marc Nicole, deputy secretary of the state Department of Budget and Management, will provide an overview of all pandemic relief programs, funded by either state or federal funds, in Maryland. DBM approved funds and tracks pandemic relief programs administered by various agencies of state and local government.

Bureau of Revenue Estimates Director Andrew Schaufele will also give an update on the economic impact of pandemic relief programs in Maryland.

Resulting from language inserted into the Fiscal Year 2022 budget by the Maryland General Assembly following Comptroller Franchot’s request for an independent review of pandemic-related spending, the workgroup will perform a full inspection of how pandemic funds have been expended; determine if the funds went to intended recipients and populations most in need; examine disparities in distribution; and identify possible predatory fraud and pandemic profiteering.
