Please take a moment to read the See Something, Say Something section below. If you notice issues such as downed power lines, damaged sidewalks, potholes, or other concerns in our district, I encourage you to send photos or details to my office. Upon receipt, I will notify the proper authorities and get things resolved quickly.

I’ll also be sending out my annual printed newsletter soon — watch for it in your mailbox! It is expected to arrive by December 1, including a recap of this year’s infrastructure and other work, as well as other useful community information.

I hope you enjoy this beautiful 80-degree weather this week. Please check out the many happenings around our community and have a happy, healthy, and harmonious week. And if you observe Yom Kippur, which begins at sundown on Wednesday, Oct. 1 and ends at sundown on Thursday, Oct. 2, may you have an easy fast.

Warm regards,

Yep, you guessed it... This highway sign is still greeting pedestrians as they drive up the ramp from Westport Road to I-264 West. I will make another call to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet this week and remind them to add this to their list of many things that require their attention. I have no doubt KYTC will get to it...

I am also posting this sign again because someone pointed out that the sign is funny. I asked the person in what way is the sign funny. He told me to read the sign again and notice the last line that prohibits animals on foot. First, the gentleman snickered that animals can't read, so they would probably violate the prohibition. Then, he said to me, "Oh, and I guess if the animal is riding his bike, he would not be in violation." LOL

If you see something, please say something. Also, if you find humor in something and want me to chuckle with you, feel free to share that, too. Email me at paula.mccraney@louisvilleky.gov.

I LOVE the constituents of District 7!

Yom Kippur

y

What is Yom Kippur?

Yom Kippur is a Jewish day of fasting and prayer that falls ten days after Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year. According to Jewish tradition, every individual’s fate for the year is “written” on Rosh Hashanah and “sealed” on Yom Kippur. In ancient times, Yom Kippur was marked by a series of complex rituals of public atonement performed by the high priest in the Jerusalem Temple. Today, Yom Kippur is observed as a day of personal reflection and prayer.

Pet Licensing Made Easy!

p
m

On Monday, Mayor Greenberg and Metro Animal Services made licensing pets easier by launching its partnership with DocuPet, a world-leading pet profile, lost pet and licensing platform. Through pet licensing and their complimentary HomeSafe® 24/7 lost pet service, DocuPet offers residents an effective pet identification and reunification program that keeps pets out of shelters and returns them home safely. Though pet licensing is mandatory for cats and dogs, many local pet owners do not license their pets regularly. With the announcement of this new partnership, DocuPet and Metro Animal Services hope to attract community pet owners to the program.

“This partnership is another step forward in our commitment to community safety, which includes the safety of our family pets," said Mayor Greenberg. “Using a platform like DocuPet is one of the best and quickest ways to ensure your pet is properly licensed, can be reunited with you, and can help free up much-needed space at our animal shelter.”

Residents can browse hundreds of colorful and unique designer tag styles online or design their own tags with an easy-to-use customization tool. Every DocuPet tag is equipped with the free HomeSafe® 24/7 lost pet service and may double as a pet’s official license. DocuPet tags are assigned a unique code on the back, which links directly to a pet’s secure online profile, making it easy for anyone who finds a lost pet to reference the code and create a Found Pet Report in seconds. Pet owners can also create Lost Pet Reports as soon as they realize their pet has gone missing. In addition, DocuPet’s dedicated dispatch staff is available 24/7 to reunite lost pets with their families.

d

“We are excited about our partnership with DocuPet as their online licensing solution will be extremely valuable to pet owners and necessary for animal safety within the community,” said Andrew McClinton, Director of Metro Animal Services. “This pet licensing partnership will help to reduce the number of animals in local shelters as well as open space and vital resources for pets that truly need our care. We are excited for residents to utilize this program to help protect their pets and all pets in the community.”

With a mission to provide a safe and happy home for every pet, DocuPet’s innovative platform will supply significant resources to Metro Animal Services, allowing it to operate efficiently and deliver critical animal services. “We are very proud to kick off this effective program to increase pet identification and reunification services for all residents,” said Grant Goodwin, DocuPet’s CEO. “Pets wearing DocuPet tags spend little to no time in the shelter versus unlicensed pets. We thank Metro Animal Services for coming on board to be an impactful part of the solution."

All cats and dogs in Louisville must be licensed and vaccinated against rabies. Pet owners can learn more and register pet licenses online at https://louisvilleky.docupet.com/ Licensing by mail, phone, or in person is also available.

New Library Executive

l

Mayor Greenberg has announced Heather Lowe as LFPL’s new executive director, effective November 10. Heather brings more than 16 years of library and archive experience to the job, including serving for the last 11 years in a variety of leadership roles at Dallas Public Library (most recently as their interim director). We can't wait for her to get started!

Listen, Learn, Act!

l

Take the Challenge! It's free and begins October 3rd

We hope you'll try it -- and, invite a friend!

Sign Up Here

We at Listen Learn Act are committed to push forward for equity and justice for EVERYONE. We must stand up, speak up, and lift up each other and continue putting one justice foot in front of the other.

We believe that staying engaged with open hearts will build community and is a salve for these chaotic times. That’s what the Anti-Racism Challenge is all about: staying aware of the racism that plagues us and proactively working to change it. We want this city-wide Challenge to reach every corner of Louisville. This is our 20th ARC -- we hope you'll join us!

Try it with a friend!

The ARC can be an individual effort (you don’t report back to anyone) but there are other ways to do it, too, and one of the most rewarding is as a group. We have several church groups that do it in community, meeting weekly to attend events or view films together as well as share their experiences with other activities. Some people do it in pairs, meeting for coffee once a week to discuss the activities they completed (and doing some together). We know one couple who invite friends in for a potluck to discuss the ARC activities they have all done. The Challenge can also be done like a selection for a book club. There are probably other ways we haven’t even thought of. We encourage you to take the Challenge with others—and please let us know if you do!

This is how it works -- each week participants receive an email with a list of 10-12 possible anti-racism activities to do on your own. We ask participants to choose and complete 3 of these over the course of a week. Activities might include reading an article or watching a video, patronizing a Black-owned business, volunteering with or donating to a social justice organization, emailing or calling a political leader.

By regularly participating in anti-racism activities, we naturally develop better habits of noticing and challenging racism in our daily lives.

Community Cleanup

b
b

We encourage all residents to take part in Brightside's Community-Wide Cleanups. Held in the spring and fall, the events are a great service opportunity for boy/girl scouts, sports teams, faith groups and community organizations. It could also be a corporate team bonding opportunity!

Cleanups are an integral part of Brightside's mission and without the help of volunteer groups, and many other volunteers throughout the year, Brightside could not achieve their goals of a cleaner, greener Louisville.

Neighborhoods can hold their own cleanups at any point throughout the year and we can provide gloves and bags for each Neighborhood Cleanup. We will work with Solid Waste Management to have the collected litter bags picked up. Give us a call at (502) 574-2613 or register online about two weeks prior to your event to schedule your cleanup. Once registered, please contact us to schedule a supply pickup time.

Thanks to each and every volunteer who supports the Brightside Community-Wide Cleanup, for your time and dedication – we can’t do it without you!

October's name comes from the Latin for "eighth" since it was the eighth month of the ancient Roman calendar, and it is the month of fall foliage, Halloween festivities, and the World Series. In contrast to the common idea that "fall" is a uniquely American term, it was used in Britain until the 17th century. October is also a month of interesting phenomena, from the bright full harvest moon to the chemical process that gives leaves their vibrant colors, and has a connection to athletic ability and longevity.

October is also national month of observance for a variety of things:

  • National Pizza Month
  • Popcorn Month
  • Pork Month
  • Sausage Month
  • Yom Kippur (October 1 - 2, 2025)
  • World Smile Day (1st Friday of the month)
