Metro Council Meeting Highlights

Caucus news

The Louisville Metro Council held their regularly scheduled Council meeting Thursday, June 26th. Here are some of the highlights.

Old Business

  • O-151-25: an ordinance relating to the fiscal year 2025-2026 Operating Budget for Louisville Metro Government. By a vote of 21 – Yes and 4 – No.
  • O-152-25: an ordinance relating to the fiscal year 2025-2026 Capital Budget for Louisville Metro Government. By a vote of 20 – Yes, 4 – No, and 1 – Abstention.
  • O-133-25: an ordinance amending Chapter 90 of LMCO regarding smoking retail stores.
  • R-070-25: resolution approving a sole source contract with Public Consulting Group for consulting services to analyze and report costs.
  • O-140-25: an ordinance amending Section 4.3.14 of the Louisville Development Code (LDC) regarding density/occupancy requirements for transitional housing permitted by right with special standards in R-5A and R-5B Zoning Districts.
  • O-158-25: an ordinance approving a TIF for the 700 East Main Street Development Area.

  • O-148-25: an ordinance approving the fiscal year 2025-2026 budget for Louisville Tourism.
  • O-149-25: an ordinance approving the fiscal year 2025-2026 budget for TARC.
  • R-048-25: resolution approving the budget and economic improvement plan for the Greater Louisville Lodging Management District.
  • R-066-25: resolution determining the property at 3021/3042, 3028, 3038, and 3044 Wilson Avenue and 3017 Wyandotte Avenue as surplus and authorizing its transfer to the Park DuValle Community Health Center.

She Serves: Exploring Careers in Law Enforcement with LMPD

The Louisville Metro Police Department is launching “She Serves,” a free 7-week leadership and engagement program designed to empower women and strengthen connections between community members and law enforcement.

Open to women ages 20 and up, the program invites participants of all backgrounds — no law enforcement experience required — to explore public service, leadership, and the inner workings of LMPD.

Sessions will be held one evening per week from 6–9 PM at the LMPD Training Academy. Space is limited to 35 participants.

Dinopalooza Opens at the Louisville Zoo

Wander Through A Land Before Time

May 17 – September 1, 2025

This spring, travel back 65 to 200 million years in time to meet iconic prehistoric animals! Encounter 23 roaring, breathing giants from the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. Enjoy the world’s tallest, life-sized robotic dinosaurs — ranging from 5-foot-long baby triceratops to a 40-foot-long tyrannosaurus rex. Hurtle back in time and follow the spectacular path of prehistory to encounter scenes of ancient giants battling, scavenging and caring for young — from the earliest primitive dinosaurs to a huge 35-foot-tall brachiosaur. 

Dinopalooza is included with Zoo admission and free for Zoo members.

Zoo Hours

The Zoo is open daily year-round. Now through September 21, 2025, Zoo hours are 10 a.m. ─ 5 p.m. (stay until 6 p.m.). The Zoo is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. Visit louisvillezoo.org for more info.

Parks & Recreation Youth Summer Camps

There are numerous summer programs available to local families to keep children active and engaged in summer learning with camps returning to select Louisville Parks and Recreation Community Centers June 9 – August 1. Camp will take place Monday through Friday from 8 am - 5 pm

To register a child, visit bestparksever.com.Camps are for children ages 5-12. The cost is a one-time registration fee of $20, plus $60 weekly. This price includes a t-shirt and one field trip per week. Campers will also enjoy creative programming, arts and crafts, athletics, swimming, and many other activities while socializing with their peers.

While summer break camps are taking place, the following community centers will host free open programming during the week from 11 am – 5 pm for children ages 6-12 - California, Parkhill, Portland, Shawnee, and South Louisville. The centers will have fun and interactive programs where campers are welcome to play sports, participate in crafts, or hang out in the center. These centers will have weekly field trips for $20 per trip.

 

The following community centers hosting summer camps this year are:

Operation White Flag : Cooling Centers

When Louisville Metro is undergoing a severe weather emergency, or extreme cold or heat, Operation White Flag goes into effect. During a wind chill of below 35 degrees or a heat index over 95 degree, participating shelters will fly a white flag outside of their doors to indicate that White Flag is occurring. You may remain inside of the shelter as long as the flag is flying outside. 

Call the Coordinated Shelter Access (CSA) line at 502-637-BEDS to find out if White Flag is in effect on any given day. 

The shelters that participate in Operation White Flag include

 

    • Wayside Christian Mission (accepts cats and dogs)

432 E. Jefferson St.

    • Salvation Army Center (day shelter only),

911 S. Brook St.

The locations below are available for people who don't have air conditioning or just need a place to escape the heat.

  • Neighborhood Place – Eight locations throughout Louisville will serve as cooling relief centers. To find the nearest location, call Metro311 or 502-574-5000.
  • Louisville Metro Parks and Recreation community centers –Fourteen community centers will be open as cooling centers during regular operating hours.
  • Louisville Free Public Library – Sixteen sites are open during regular hours.
  • Senior Nutrition Sites – The Louisville Metro Senior Nutrition Program operates 14 congregate sites for seniors 60 and older.
  • Fan Fair – Louisville Metro Resilience and Community Services has fans available for residents who are 60 or older, or who have a documented disability.

If you are ineligible or banned from any particular shelter, it is up to the staff on whether or not you are allowed in. White Flag also does not guarantee that a shelter bed will be available.

The Louisville Health Department WIC Program provides assistance with obtaining groceries. Open from 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM, Monday to Friday, the WIC Program can be reached at 502-574-5978. 

To apply for SNAP benefits, also known as food stamps, call 855-306-8959 or head to 908 West Broadway. The SNAP office is open from 7:30 AM - 4:30 PM.
