Louisville is currently offering free mulch to Jefferson County residents through end of summer

Louisville is now offering free mulch to Jefferson County residents every Monday through the end of summer. Louisville Parks and Recreation's Urban Forestry Division has started giving out natural, dye-free mulch to residents and nonprofits in need of free mulch. The mulch can be picked up from the Urban Forestry Division's office, located at 9200 Whipps Mill Road in Lyndon, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. every Monday, except on national holidays. If you plan on getting free mulch, you will need to make an appointment by clicking here. You'll also need to bring a Jefferson County ID and your own containers such as trailers, truck beds, buckets or garbage bags, to transport up to three cubic yards of mulch.

National Lightning Safety Awareness Week: Stay safe during thunderstorms

Since its launch in 2001, National Lightning Safety Awareness Week has helped reduce lightning-related deaths in the U.S. from about 55 to fewer than 30 annually—thanks to greater public awareness and safety practices.

Key safety reminders:

• Thunderstorms can develop quickly—don’t get caught off guard, especially during outdoor activities like swimming.
• Lightning risk increases as a storm approaches, peaks when overhead, and lingers as it moves away.
• Many injuries occur because people wait too long to seek shelter or return outside too soon.

Swimming pool safety tips:

• Exit the pool immediately at the first sound of thunder or sight of lightning.
• Seek shelter in a fully enclosed building—open structures like porches or pavilions are not safe.
• Indoor pools can also be dangerous during storms due to water’s conductivity and potential indirect strikes.

Lawn Care Equipment Rebates for Residents

APCD’s Lawn Care for Cleaner Air program offers rebates to Louisville residents and businesses that purchase electric equipment, and even larger rebates for those that also recycle their old gas-powered equipment. Since Lawn Care for Cleaner Air’s inception in 2003, the program has issued over 12,000 total rebates, keeping nearly five million pounds of pollution from Louisville’s air. Along with the environmental impact of investing in electric lawn equipment, maintaining your lawn in accordance with local ordinances contributes to a safer, healthier, and more vibrant community. Overgrown grass and untrimmed bushes can attract pests like ticks and mosquitoes or conceal hazards such as debris or hidden holes. Regular maintenance, including trimming grass to keep it under 10 inches, helps prevent blight, uphold neighborhood standards, and protect property values. Rebates on eligible equipment are available year-round. The equipment grant is awarded annually. The next round of applications will open in the fall to be awarded in the 2026 season. You might know that millions of birds migrate over Louisville every spring and fall. But did you also know that billions of migrating birds are hurt or killed each year in the U.S.—and it’s due to artificial light at night pulling them off course or causing them to fly into windows and buildings? 

With your help, Lights Out Louisville—a Louisville Audubon Society conservation initiative—aims to change that. 

The solution is simple, and anyone can be a part of it: 

—This April and May, between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m., turn off non-essential lights—both indoors and outside—and close your blinds, shades, and curtains. 

—By reducing artificial nighttime light during the two biggest migration months in our area, we give migrating birds a better chance of surviving their long journeys. 

—With a few simple actions, you’ll help save birds—and save money on your electricity bill at the same time!
