Louisville is currently offering free mulch to Jefferson County residents through end of summer

Louisville is now offering free mulch to Jefferson County residents every Monday through the end of summer. Louisville Parks and Recreation's Urban Forestry Division has started giving out natural, dye-free mulch to residents and nonprofits in need of free mulch. The mulch can be picked up from the Urban Forestry Division's office, located at 9200 Whipps Mill Road in Lyndon, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. every Monday, except on national holidays. If you plan on getting free mulch, you will need to make an appointment by clicking here. You'll also need to bring a Jefferson County ID and your own containers such as trailers, truck beds, buckets or garbage bags, to transport up to three cubic yards of mulch.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is June 15th

June 15th  World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) was launched by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization at the United Nations. The purpose of WEAAD is to provide an opportunity for communities around the world to promote a better understanding of abuse and neglect of older persons by raising awareness of the cultural, social, economic and demographic processes affecting elder abuse and neglect.

Ford Driving Skills for Life Returning to Louisville June 21-22

Spend a half day with your teen at the free Ford Driving Skills for Life safe mobility program for newly licensed or permitted drivers.

Ford Driving Skills for Life provides skills beyond those taught in traditional drivers education courses and is an important step in keeping everyone on the roads safer. The event pairs teen drivers with professional instructors, focusing on important driving skills, including:

• Hazard Recognition
• Vehicle Handling
• Speed and Space Management
• Reaction Time
• Avoiding the Dangers of Distracted and Impaired Driving
• Safety in Mobility

The free training program is conducted on a closed course. Vehicles used during the training are provided.

Registration is limited. Morning and afternoon sessions available (choose only one) on Saturday, June 21 and Sunday, June 22.

Save birds by choosing to go Lights Out this spring!

You might know that millions of birds migrate over Louisville every spring and fall. But did you also know that billions of migrating birds are hurt or killed each year in the U.S.—and it’s due to artificial light at night pulling them off course or causing them to fly into windows and buildings? 

With your help, Lights Out Louisville—a Louisville Audubon Society conservation initiative—aims to change that. 

The solution is simple, and anyone can be a part of it: 

—This April and May, between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m., turn off non-essential lights—both indoors and outside—and close your blinds, shades, and curtains. 

—By reducing artificial nighttime light during the two biggest migration months in our area, we give migrating birds a better chance of surviving their long journeys. 

—With a few simple actions, you’ll help save birds—and save money on your electricity bill at the same time!

Lock up!

• Never leave your unattended vehicle with its windows down or doors unlocked.
• Make sure to always lock up your house, garage, and shed if you have one. 
• Bring valuables inside.

Avoid heat related injuries or death.

• Never leave kids, pets, or anyone in your care inside your unattended vehicle.
• If your kids or pets are playing outside on a hot day, be sure they drink plenty of water and find shade when they need it.

Practice safe bike riding.

• Check your bike to make sure the tires are inflated and the brakes are working.
• Put reflectors on the front and back of your bike.
• Always wear a helmet and pads for protection.
• If you ride on the street, keep to the right and follow all traffic signs.
• Be on the lookout for traffic, yield to vehicles, and signal when turning.
• Use the crosswalks and yield to pedestrians. If you have to cross at an                       intersection, look both ways and walk your bike to the other side.
• Stay alert and watch out for hazards.

Drive safely.

• Always designate a sober driver. This applies to driving your car, motorcycle, boat, or anything on the road. 
• Buckle up.
• Avoid distractions while driving. Put your phone down. 
• Always look for pedestrians, motorcyclists, and bicyclists. 

Be prepared before you leave on vacation.

• If you are going out of town, ask a family member or trusted neighbor to keep an eye on your house and retrieve any mail or packages that arrive. 
• Make sure your home is locked up and secure.
• Set a light on a timer inside of your home to create the appearance of activity inside.
• Consider installing exterior motion sensor lighting. This can help deter crime. 
• Keep your valuables out of plain sight, and place them in a safe if possible. 
• Do not post your vacation plans on social media.
