Special Councilman Update Regarding the Consent Decree!

The Following Statement has been released by the members of the Louisville Metro Council’s Minority Caucus in response to the Department of Justice’s decision to dismiss its lawsuit against Louisville Metro.

The decision of the US Department of Justice to dismiss the case involving Louisville Metro in a consent decree is welcomed by the members of the Metro Council’s Minority Caucus. In December, we argued that efforts to bring real and lasting reforms to policing within our community is best accomplished by persons closely associated to this community rather than out-of-town, federally appointed persons who benefit from a slow and more costly consent decree, and who have no accountability to the people of Louisville.

Reforms to policies such as no-knock warrants, training, and investigations have already been made and are being implemented. We constructed a new state of the art first responder wellness center that benefits our officers’ physical and mental well-being. We have funded and are completing a new LMPD headquarters to improve public safety collaboration and leadership. Finally, we are focused on moving forward with the purchase and construction of a new and much needed police training facility to ensure we have the best trained officers serving our community.

The 12 Republican members of the Metro Council’s Minority Caucus are focused on bringing safer streets for all people in every neighborhood. We are committed to getting officers the resources they need and supporting reforms that will both ensure continued progress on reducing crime while also supporting the need for accountability and progress in terms of community engagement and respect.
