Dear Friends and Neighbors,
At our last Metro Council meetings, we did pass my amendments to the rental property registry and the lead abatement program for rental properties. Contrary to how some have reported about this, these changes do not weaken our ability to address issues around children exposed to lead paint. As a matter of fact, I would argue the changes will allow us to focus on the true violators and not waste time and money on landlords who are doing a great job and providing a safe service to their tenants. I want to thank my colleagues who supported this effort and recognize that legislation should be focused on problems and not create burdens on law abiding business owners providing a great product to our communities.
I have recently proposed an ordinance that would allow Cigar Bars to operate in Louisville. Almost all of our competitor cities and those that surround us allow for these. It is about time we made this change which aligns very well with our ‘bourbonism’, horse racing industry, and general tourism industries. This passed overwhelmingly out of committee and comes to a final vote next week at Council. I look forward to this addition to our small business community.
Last month I recognized Mr. Anthony McFarland at our annual black history month program. Mr. McFarland is a lifelong educator and is currently the head of the Social Studies department at Echo Trail Middle School. He and his wife are residents of District 19 in the Middletown area. It was an honor to recognize Mr. McFarland and I appreciate his career of excellence and dedication to our community. See picture below!
