Fern Creek Firefighter, Acting Sgt. Aaron Dossey Saves Young Swimmer From Drowning

Metro Councilman Kevin Bratcher and Councilwoman Ginny Mulvey Wooldridge presented Acting Sgt. Dossey with a proclamation recognizing his heroic actions while off duty. While on vacation with his family, Acting Sgt. Dossey saved a young swimmer from drowning at a water park. We are incredibly proud of his quick thinking and bravery in a life-threatening situation.

Café LOUIE is designed to be an informal gathering of civic minded individuals interested in meeting with their elected officials to discuss local issues. When you arrive, grab a cup of Heine Brothers coffee and fill out a notecard with your specific question(s). After a brief introduction of elected officials and special guests, a trained facilitator will direct your questions to officials for comment and discussion.

All Café LOUIE meetings begin at 9:00 am. Stick around after the event for additional programming available at some branch locations, register to vote with the League of Women Voters, sign up to be a Friend of the Library, or just visit your local branch and check out a good book!

It's Flood Safety Week - Check Your Homeowner's Insurance Coverage

This week, March 16-22, is Flood Safety Week. Floods are the most severe natural disaster in Louisville Metro according to the Louisville Metro Multi-Hazards Mitigation Plan. Flooding can occur from the Ohio River, interior streams, or a dam or levee failure. River floods generally develop slowly over several days or weeks, but flash flood from heavy rains or a dam or levee failure can occur in just a few minutes. Everyone should be aware of the flood hazards and be prepared.

Did you know homeowner’s insurance does not cover flood damage? Just a few inches of water from a flood can cause tens of thousands of dollars in damage. Protect yourself and your home by calling your insurance agent to learn more about flood insurance or by going to www.floodsmart.gov.

Beginning May 7, 2025, Every Air Traveler Over 18 Will Need a REAL ID

Beginning May 7, 2025, every air traveler 18 years of age and older will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license/permit/identification card or another acceptable federal form of ID to fly within the United States, visit military bases, or enter a federal building that requires ID. REAL ID compliant cards in Kentucky are known as REAL IDs and have a star cutout in a black circle in the upper-right portion of the card.

Here is a list of acceptable forms of ID for U.S. commercial air travel:

Kentucky’s REAL ID card versions or other REAL ID-compliant cards offered by other states
U.S. passport
U.S. passport card
DHS trusted traveler card (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
U.S. Department of Defense ID, including IDs issued to dependents
Permanent resident card
Border crossing card
DHS-designated enhanced driver’s license
Federally recognized, tribal-issued photo ID
HSPD-12 PIV card
Foreign government-issued passport
Canadian provincial driver’s license or Indian and Northern Affairs Canada card

Military bases and federal buildings like the White House will accept REAL IDs. Contact the base or building directly before visiting for a list of other acceptable forms of identification.

The Iroquois Amphitheater is a premier destination for live entertainment, featuring a diverse lineup of events ranging from nationally touring acts to community productions. As the official amphitheater of Kentucky, it continues to celebrate its rich heritage while embracing the future, serving as a vibrant cultural hub and a testament to the enduring spirit of the arts in Louisville.

The Iroquois Amphitheater Box Office will be open for in-person ticket purchases on Thursdays from 1 – 6 pm and Fridays from 11 am – 4 pm. It is located at 1080 Amphitheater Road. For more information, click here.

Louisville Metro Air Pollution Control District Notice of Public Comment Period

What action is the District taking? The Louisville Metro Air Pollution Control District is opening a public comment period on March 19, 2025, regarding the District’s 2023 Ozone Wildfire Exceptional Event Demonstration.

How can I comment on this action? You can comment in writing using the online public comment form, or by mail to Regulatory Coordinator, Lauren Robbins, Louisville Metro Air Pollution Control District, 701 W. Ormsby Ave., Suite 303, Louisville, Kentucky 40203, until 5 pm, April 18, 2025.

Where can I get a copy of the proposed action? A paper copy of the proposal may be obtained from the District by contacting Cherri Staley at (502) 574-6000. Please specify that you are calling about the 2023 Ozone Wildfire Exceptional Event Demonstration, provide your name and mailing address, and allow time for processing and delivery via USPS. An electronic copy of the proposal may be downloaded from the District’s website.

Summary of proposal The purpose of this submittal is to request exclusion of certain 2023 ozone monitoring data due to wildfire smoke impacts from Canadian wildfires measured at the Cannons Lane (AQS #211-111-0067) ambient air quality monitor. Excluding exceptional events data from the 2021-2023 three-year annual mean design value has regulatory significance as the exclusion of this data will impact United States Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) designation process, given that the events are part of the 2022-2024 design value by which EPA will make its determination regarding whether the Louisville area has attained the level of the appropriate NAAQS under the 2015 8-Hour ozone standard. The demonstration has been drafted and is being submitted consistent with EPA guidance.

What is the timeline for this action? The comment period begins March 19, 2025, and runs through April 18, 2025.

Metro Council Meeting Summary - March 12, 2025

The Metro Council met Thursday for its first meeting of March. During the meeting members recognized students from Assumption, duPont Manual and Eastern High Schools for winning state championships in a variety of sports. Following the passage of the consent items (13 ordinances and resolutions) the Metro Council took up the following three items as part of Old Business.

Neighborhood Notification Change: Unanimously passed an ordinance O-023-25 amended Louisville Metro’s Land Development Code to increase neighborhood participation and awareness when a development plan is changed by 25% or more.

Opioid Settlement Funding: Passed an ordinance O-024-25 established the manner in which approximately $2.9 million in Opioid Settlement Funding for the hiring of a 3^rd party advisor to create a District Court Diversion program, school and after-school drug prevention programs, expansion of contracted evaluation services for programs financed by opioid settlement funds, and funding to expand awareness for Casey’s Law.

Old Bardstown Road Proposal sent back to Planning Commission: The Metro Council Unanimously moved to send the proposal to rezone property located on Old Bardstown Road back to the Planning Commission after Metro was made aware of the fact that some neighbors were not notified of the proposed changes.

Next week is a committee week for the Metro Council. The next regularly scheduled meeting of the full Metro Council is scheduled for March 13, 2025. The Metro Council will not hold meetings the week of spring break.

We Need District 24 Residents to Serve on Metro Boards and Commissions

There are approximately 100 boards and commissions with many areas of interest, including business and economic development, land planning, parks and recreation, public health and public safety. We need residents from District 24 to be a part of the decision making process for Metro Government.

If you are interested in volunteering for one of Louisville Metro Government's Boards and Commissions, now is the time to start. By being a part of a board or commission, you will offer your time and your talents to improve the quality of life in our community.
