Councilman Bratcher Honors Arieanna Washington for Black History Month

Arieanna Washington - BHM

Councilman Kevin Bratcher, Arieanna Washington and Councilwoman Barbara Shanklin

Every year, the Metro Council hosts a program celebrating Black History Month. A portion of the program is dedicated to honoring recipients from each of the 26 Metro Council districts who have made an impact in the community. This year, Councilman Bratcher honored Arieanna Washington.

Arieanna Washington is a junior at Dupont Manual High School in the Mathematics, Science, and Technology (MST) pathway. She has received various academic awards, including Amazon Innovator of the Year, Women in Geography award, and Congress and Presidential academic awards. When she is not hitting the books, you will find her playing field hockey for Manual or making a new garment at her sewing table.

Throughout the years, Arie’s desire to help the community has been seen through participation with Girl Scouts, volunteering with local non-profits such as The Humane Society, Homeless Coalition, My Dog Eats First, and the Angel Tree, and working at a senior living facility to help the elderly. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she used her passion for sewing to make masks to help keep the community safe. Her love for sewing has continued, and a design of hers was selected to walk the runway at the annual KMAC Couture Fashion Show.

In her spare time, she enjoys reading, cuddling with her two dogs, spending time with family and friends, and going thrift shopping.

Metro Council Meeting Summary: Feb 27, 2025

The Metro Council met on February 27 and addressed a number of zoning cases, regulatory policy changes and contract reviews. The following is a summary of some of the more consequential items we voted on as part of the meeting.

Rental Registry Adjusted: Amended the Louisville Metro Code of Ordinances related to the Registry of Rental Properties. The action taken by the Metro Council eliminates annual re-registration and removes the requirement for inspections of properties not involved in a complaint. The ordinance also sought to remove the posting of personal contact information online as well as other adjustments to eliminate unnecessary regulations for property owners. (O-055-25)

Lead Paint Testing: Amended Chapter 156 of the Louisville Metro Code of Ordinances related to lead based hazards and repealing LMCO Chapter 167. This ordinance eliminated requirements for testing and repeated testing for properties in Louisville that haven’t been linked to positive lead exposure tests. The ordinance would remove the requirement for retesting properties that undertake permanent lead mitigation and seeks to improve testing for those persons who are tested as being exposed to lead by the Metro Health Department. (O-056-25)

Kurz Way Zoning Denial: The Metro Council unanimously voted to support the Planning Commission’s denial of a zoning change proposal for property located at 1600 Kurz Way (O-052-26)

East Manslick Road Zoning Approval: The Metro Council unanimously approved an ordinance approving a zoning change for property located at 4603 East Manslick Road (O-050-25)

Code Violations Citation Improvement: Approved a change in Chapter 156 of the Metro Code of Ordinances related to Code Violations. The change will allow Metro Code Enforcement to enforce violations of the Land Development Code related to exterior property violations. (O-044-25)

NULU Overlay: Approved amendments to the NULU Review Overlay District as set forth in Chapter 162. (O-027-25)

This is a committee week for the Metro Council. The next regularly scheduled meeting of the full Metro Council is scheduled for March 13, 2025.

Louisville Zoo Walking Club: Step into Wellness! (Membership to the Zoo is not required to enroll.)

Zoo pic 1

The Louisville Zoo Walking Club is reopening with a new name and new way to join! From March 1 through October 31, participants are invited to walk the Zoo before regular hours and watch as the Zoo wakes up during this free program. Entry is from 8 to 9:15 a.m., with exit by 9:30 a.m.

Membership to the Zoo is not required to enroll in the Walking Club. Walkers must simply register in person at the Zoo’s entrance before their first walk. Registration is available daily during program hours. After registering, members will receive a Walking Club membership card for quick entry on future visits.

The one-mile, paved walking loop includes both flat areas and hilly terrain, with directional signs to keep walkers on track. Walkers enter at the front gate and are checked in by a Zoo staff member.

Zoo exhibits, concessions, rentals, and other services are not open during Walking Club hours. If walkers wish to see the animals, they must re-enter the Zoo via the front gate at 10 a.m. with a paid admission receipt or Zoo membership.

Zoning Matters 2025

Planning and Zoning Updates

8803, 8805 and 8807 Old Bardstown Road (Case 24-ZONE-0105) is now scheduled for review and decision by the Planning Commission on Thursday, March 6th.  The discussion in the recent LD&T meeting indicated a change in the proposal.  The Goodwill store portion of the land continues to need C1 zoning.  The additional 3 sites are now anticipated to be some sort of medical offices and thus the developer will be seeking OR1 zoning (rather than C1) for that portion of the land.  For more information about the nature of this proposal and how to participate in the meeting or otherwise comment for the public record, contact Case Manager Molly Clark (molly.clark@louisvilleky.gov or 502-574-8656).  All comments for the public record must be submitted prior to the Planning Commission meeting.

6422 Billtown Road (Case 24-ZONE-0137) is scheduled for a review by the Land Development & Transportation Committee (which only focuses on technical details of the plan to make sure those are ready for the Planning Commission to do its overall review) on Thursday, March 13th.  This is a proposal for a change in zoning from R-4 to C-1 and R-6.  For more information about the nature of this proposal and how to participate in the meeting or otherwise comment for the public record, contact Case Manager Amy Brooks (amy.brooks@louisvilleky.gov or 502-574-8215).  All comments for the public record must be submitted prior to the Planning Commission meeting.

9911 & 10019 Wingfield Road (Case 25-ZONEPA-0005) had the Neighborhood Meeting on February 25th at the Fern Creek Community Center (6104 Bardstown Road).  For more information about the nature of this proposal, next steps in the process, and how to participate/comment for the public record, contact Case Manager Molly Clark (molly.clark@louisvilleky.gov or 502-574-8656).  All comments for the public record must be submitted prior to the Planning Commission meeting.

11380 Seatonville Road (Case 24-ZONE-0127) now has a formal application submitted.  There are some issues to be addressed before it is scheduled for a public hearing.  Once planning staff consider those issues to be sufficiently addressed, the proposal will next be scheduled for a review by the Land Development & Transportation Committee (which only focuses on technical details of the plan to make sure those are ready for the Planning Commission to do its overall review).  A petition for a night hearing has been successful, so when the Planning Commission hearing is scheduled, it will be in the evening at the Fern Creek Christian Church at 9419 Seatonville Road.  For more information about the nature of this proposal and how to participate/comment for the public record, contact Case Manager Molly Clark (molly.clark@louisvilleky.gov or 502-574-8656).  All comments for the public record must be submitted prior to the Planning Commission meeting.

9300 & 9308 Old Bardstown Road, 10313 & 10311 R Thixton Lane, Parcel ID 066600250000 (Case 24-ZONE-0088) was approved by the Planning Commission on Thursday, February 20th.  This completed the public record that will be the basis for Metro Council review and action in the following 30-90 days.

8915 Old Bardstown Road (Case 24-ZONE-0113) and 11401 Race Road (Case 24-ZONE-0115) were both passed by the Planning Commission on Thursday, February 6th.  This completed the public record that will be the basis for Metro Council review and action in the following 30-90 days.

REMINDER: One beneficial and convenient way for you to share your thoughts on a case (to be part of the public record) is to use this form.
