This is an excellent opportunity for residents to address any concerns or offer suggestions about the district while going about their typical weekend routines.

On Saturday, November 23, 2024, Councilwoman Purvis will be available at the Portland Kroger, located at 520 N. 35^th Street, from 9:00 a.m. – Noon.

Councilwoman Purvis will be stationed at the front of Kroger, appointments are not required, so feel free to please stop by.

“As we wrap up 2024, I’d like to hear your ideas and suggestions on priorities to focus on in the upcoming year,” said Councilwoman Purvis. “Please stop by and say hello on Saturday!”

'ANNUAL DAY' CELEBRATION MARKS 31 YEARS OF NEIGHBORHOOD PLACE IN LOUISVILLE

Social service workers benefitted from a day full of inspiration and valuable training last Thursday, as the innovative Neighborhood Place network held its 2024 Annual Day at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Louisville. The day-long training conference acknowledged Neighborhood Place accomplishments and explores new ideas for helping Louisville’s most vulnerable residents.

More than 300 staff and representatives of the Neighborhood Place network attended the conference at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Breakout training sessions included “Financial Empowerment 101,” “Supporting the Mental Health of Students of Color,” “Food Justice and Health Equity,” and “Health Insurance Literacy.”

“Thanks to the inspiration of the founding pioneers who started the innovative Neighborhood Place model 31 years ago, and the unwavering commitment of its staff, Neighborhood Place has continued to serve as an important social foundation in Louisville,” said Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg. “Neighborhood Place lives up to its promise of integrating multiple services and community partners under one roof, and maximizing every available resource.”

Now with eight locations across Louisville, Neighborhood Place had humble beginnings, starting at a rifle range on the campus of Thomas Jefferson Middle School, but has grown to become a national model on how to effectively distribute services.

AMPLIFY 502 IS BACK!

TARC ROUTE CHANGES

TARC is hosting two open houses this week on the proposed January 2025 service reductions and changes. TARC staff will be on hand throughout each open house to answer questions or help you to submit comments about the proposed changes. Open house times are:

Wednesday, November 13: TARC Building, 1000 W Broadway; 5-7 pm
Thursday, November 14: Shively City Hall, 3920 Dixie Highway; 5-7 pm

These service changes are planed to go into effect January 26, 2025. The proposed changes include:

Three route discontinuations (the #22, the #52, and the #63)
Two route consolidations to absorb coverage of discontinued routes (changes to the #18 18^th Street and #29 Eastern Parkway)
Routing reductions (the #17 Bardstown and #25 Oak Street)
Frequency reductions (the #4 4^th Street and #10 Dixie Highway will go from every 15 minutes to every 20 minutes)
Assorted other changes, including an increase on frequency on the #29 Eastern Parkway and #40 Taylorsville Road to reduce the impact of the changes on TARC customers.

TARC is proposing these reductions for two important reasons:

A more reliable TARC: TARC service is not sufficiently reliable. A major reason is that TARC has too many routes with very low ridership and not enough operators to consistently operate them. The planned service reductions aim to enhance TARC’s reliability, providing a more dependable transit experience for customers.
TARC’s fiscal cliff: Earlier this year, TARC projected a $30 million deficit by mid-2026 in if action is not taken before then. These proposed reductions are anticipated to save $4 million annually.

Bring a Can, Save on Admission: Wild Winter Days Returns to Louisville Zoo

Join the Louisville Zoo and Kroger in supporting Dare to Care Food Bank

and local conservation efforts this winter

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (October 31, 2024) – The Louisville Zoo invites guests to celebrate Wild Winter Days, presented by Kroger, Nov. 1, 2024 through Feb. 28, 2025. Wild Winter Days offers discounted admission to the Zoo and incorporates a food drive for Dare to Care Food Bank.

Guests who bring at least one non-perishable food item per person may purchase discounted tickets at the Zoo ticket windows for $10.50 per adult and $7.50 per child or senior. Twenty-five cents of every admission ticket will also support the Zoo’s conservation efforts.

Since this partnership began in 2009, the Zoo has collected more than 30,000 pounds of food, thanks to the generosity of its guests. That is the weight of nearly five male rhinoceroses!

Dare to Care Food Bank’s most needed items include canned meats like tuna and chicken, as well as canned fruit and vegetables, beans, peanut butter, soup, rice, cereal, fruit juice, and pasta. No glass containers. More details on items of need are available at daretocare.org.

The discount is available only at the gate and cannot be applied to online purchases, special fee-based programs, prepaid groups, field trips or other discounts. No refunds will be provided for tickets purchased online or in advance. While multiple canned good items per person are appreciated, only one discount applies per ticket.

Zoo Hours

The Zoo is open daily year-round. Now through March 14, 2025, hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with guests exiting by 5 p.m. The Zoo is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. Visit louisvillezoo.org for more information.

"ONCE UPON AN ORCHESTRA"

“Once Upon An Orchestra” returns to Louisville libraries, providing free musical storytelling performances for families

Louisville, Ky. (August 15, 2024) -- The Louisville Free Public Library and the Louisville Orchestra are pleased to announce the fourth season of the collaborative project “Once Upon An Orchestra.” Public performances begin on Tuesday, October 1 at the Western Library and will tour to all LFPL locations through March 2025. The complete schedule is listed below.

Presented free, each branch will host one of six different, unique family programs that weave music and storytelling together in an interactive experience. Louisville Orchestra musicians perform original music created around familiar and beloved children’s books. The hour-long experiences include a 30-minute small ensemble performance preceded by a hands-on activity to build a musical instrument from recycled materials, so everyone can play along.

For “Once Upon An Orchestra,” composers from the LO Creators Corps have developed original musical scores to accompany a number of beloved children’s books, including Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar. In addition, this year’s series features two new composition – Laura Numeroff’s If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson.

The musically enhanced storytelling leans into one of the key programs of the LFPL, the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Challenge. This Library program encourages all families and caregivers to read at least 1000 books with their preschool-age children to build the vocabulary and language skills needed for success in school.

Co-presented by the Louisville Orchestra and the Louisville Free Public Library, “Once Upon An Orchestra” is funded with support from Louisville Metro Government.
