FAN FAIR TO PROVIDE HUNDREDS OF FREE ELECTRIC FANS TO PEOPLE IN NEED

Ninth annual giveaway to distribute donated fans to seniors, people with disabilities
Louisville, KY. It’s time once again for Fan Fair, Louisville Metro Government’s annual giveaway of free electric box fans. The event – sponsored by the Louisville Metro Office for Aging and Disabled Citizens (OADC) and the Kentuckiana Regional Planning and Development Agency (KIPDA) – distributes hundreds of donated electric fans to local seniors and people with disabilities, helping them keep their homes cool and comfortable during the summer months.
“I am so excited to host Fan Fair 2024,” said OADC Coordinator Alli Woosley. “Every year we strive to improve this one-of-a-kind event and make sure our city’s most vulnerable citizens can receive some relief during the summer months. This event would not be possible without our generous community partners and individual donations from the community.”
The fans have been donated by local businesses, community organizations, and residents, and will be distributed at Fan Fair – scheduled for Saturday, June 8, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Edison Center (701 W. Ormsby Ave.).
Fans will be available at no cost for seniors 60 and older – as well as for individuals with documented, physical disabilities – on a first-come, first-served basis. There is a limit of one fan per qualified individual.
To receive a free electric fan, you must:
• Be 60 years or older OR have documentation verified by a physician of a physical disability
• Be a resident of Jefferson, Oldham, Henry, Shelby, Spencer, Trimble or Bullitt counties
• Provide proof of address and age
Fan Fair began in 2016, when KIPDA and OADC joined forces to come up with a creative solution to the numerous calls they received requesting heat relief.
“This event is a perfect example of what can be achieved when partners and the general community join together to support older adults and those with disabilities,” said KIPDA Director of Social Services Jessica Elkin. “Our mission as an Area Agency on Aging (AAA) is to ensure that every member of our community has the services and supports they need to live and age well in their home. One part of that is being able to stay cool during the hot summer months. Thank you to everyone helping keep Louisville cool for the ninth year in a row.”
In addition to the fan giveaway, a resource fair will be held at the Edison Center, providing attendees with basic information about local resources. Participating vendors include JenCare Senior Medical Center, CenterWell Senior Primary Care, UofL Brown Cancer Center, AARP Kentucky, the Department for Aging and Independent Living, Passport Health Plan by Molina Healthcare, WellCare, Oak Street Health, Project Warm, Aetna, and Kynect. Many other community organizations, including Masterson’s Catering, gave financial donations toward the purchase of fans.
Deputy Mayor Nicole George will also be on hand at Fan Fair, to meet with constituents and enjoy the event.
WLKY is serving as the media partner, providing both on-air and online advertising, and serving as one of the donation drop-off sites. Lowe’s also provided support by allowing the purchase of some fans at cost.
More details about Fan Fair can be found at www.louisvilleky.gov/fanfair.

Louisville Free Public Library’s annual Summer Reading Program off to a hot start!

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (June 5, 2024) – LFPL’s Summer Reading Program has been a Louisville tradition for nearly a century, helping children and teens avoid summer learning loss by encouraging them to read for fun by offering prizes and incentives. This year’s program, A Universe of Stories, just kicked off last Saturday and more than 9,000 area youth—newborns to 12th graders—have already signed up!

To complete the program, school-aged children need to read ten books, teens read six books, and preschool-aged children and younger need to read, or have read to them, 20 books. Everyone who completes the program will receive an alien pencil pouch (kids) or tech bag (teens), as well as coupons for free treats from Ehrler’s Ice Cream and Fazoli’s, and free passes to area attractions like Kentucky Science Center, Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory, Squire Boone Caverns, Louisville Bats Baseball, Racing Louisville FC, select UofL sports, and more.

LFPL’s Summer Reading Program is presented by the Library Foundation and is absolutely FREE. Participants can register online at LFPL.org/SummerReading, or stop by any Louisville Free Public Library location between now and August 3.

LFPL’s Summer Reading is more than books!

Did you know that LFPL also offers hundreds of FREE events and activities as part of the Summer Reading Program, to help keep kids and teens entertained and engaged when school is out. Join us for magic shows, storytelling, art projects, wild animals, and a whole lot more all summer long.

This Saturday, the Main Library will host a Percy Jackson-themed Camp-In (noon-3 p.m.) just for teens, complete with indoor star-gazing, traditional camp activities, crafts, games, and more. Then on June 29, the Northeast Regional Library will once again host the Greatest Day of Play – a day full of imagination, art, games, and live performances for kids and families.

To learn more about these events, and all of the other exciting things happening at your Library this summer, visit LFPL.org/events.
