The People's Consent Decree Resolution

Yesterday, the District 3 Office filed legislation with the Jefferson County Attorney's Office for a Resolution honoring The People's Consent Decree. We also included the recommendations found in the History of Policing Report by the University of Louisville, which was a result of the truth and transformation project.

The text of the resolution appears below. Our office tried to reflect the language in The People's Consent Decree as closely as possible, however, some language had to be updated to fit the JCAO's requirements for form and legality. Since the Chief of Police reports directly to the mayor, this legislation must be a resolution and not an ordinance.

Our point is to continue to highlight the ways our community can reimagine public safety that works for everyone. Given LMPD's active DOJ negotiations and continued allegations of misconduct, we believe this resolution is timely. The goal is to formally recognize the harms of LMPD and the commitment to move forward with better policing for all.

We will be having a press conference at 11am on Thursday, May 30th at on the 2nd Floor Media Room at 601 West Jefferson Street.
