An Update from Councilman Reno-Weber
Constituents,
During yesterday’s Metro Council meeting, I was proud to stand with Steve Henry of the Future Fund, Jeff Frank of The Floyds Fork coalition, Terrell Holder of the Greater Louisville Sierra Club, and so many other community members who care deeply about preserving the beautiful community gem that is Floyd’s Fork for future generations.
I am heartbroken and deeply disappointed that the Council did not vote to approve the recommendations around building in the floodplain that came out of the planning commission.
As I said on the floor of the Council, I believe this is one of the most impactful issues I will work on while in office.
Because so many people are following this issue, here is the the breakdown: After locking in protections for tree canopy and environmentally friendly lighting restrictions, Council Members Chappell, Blackwell, Fowler, Owen and I all asked to table for two weeks, allowing time for our community to review the substantive issues that had been worked on by so many for so long.
We were voted down.
On the floor, I sponsored an amendment to expand protections of the floodplain.
We were voted down.
Councilwoman Chappell took up the issue of impervious surface restrictions.
We were voted down.
Even though we did not get all of what we wanted, we won historic protections for the tree canopy, buffer zones, and environmentally friendly lighting - successes we will build on as we continue this fight within and beyond the council chamber.
I have always been a champion for environmental protection and the preservation of public lands, and I will continue to advocate for
- Full funding for the Soil and Water Conservation District
- Support TreesLouisville to increasing Louisville’s Tree Canopy
- Building a forward-looking EV-infrastructure
The anger and frustration we feel today is real, and will only deepen our resolve to protect the future of Floyds Fork and all of Louisville’s public lands for generations to come.
