D3 Office Updates April 12th 2024

First, we hope everyone is having a lovely beginning to spring and Derby season! This is such an exciting time for our city and we are looking forward to seeing you outside real soon. If you'd like our office to attend an event this season, please use the link on the left hand side of this newsletter.

It's been another great few weeks being in community and working to learn more about how our city works and what we can do to make it better. We are currently planning a neighborhood clean-up in the Taylor-Berry adjacent neighborhood in June and working with those residents to get the word out! We have approved several sidewalk improvements, including on Nichols Meadow Circle and on Oregon Avenue. We've been in talks with the Mayor of Shively and the Louisville Mayor about an expanded Shively Library as well as attending several Anti-Violence Coalition meetings with the Office for Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods. (We are learning the Council Office requires expertise on many topics!)

As always, as the weather heats up, please reach out to our office with any concerns regarding abandoned vehicles, overgrown grass, or pest problems. You may also call 3-1-1.

Our office is working alongside the Jefferson County Attorney's Office to file our Peoples' Consent Decree Resolution. This is particularly timely, given the ongoing DOJ community meetings. Councilwoman Parrish-Wright also attended the special Public Safety committee meeting on Wednesday, April 10th, regarding the state of negotiations between the DOJ and the LMPD. Unfortunately, these negotiations will remain confidential at the direction of the DOJ and the administration. The goal of these negotiations is to bring the LMPD into compliance with "constitutional policing", and correcting the several patterns and practices of discrimination identified by the DOJ investigation. Once the DOJ and the LMPD reach an agreement (date unknown), they will share what they agreed to and there will be a brief period for public comment before the DOJ files the consent decree with a federal court. We were present at the last DOJ community meeting at the Republic Bank Foundation YMCA and heard from several residents frustrations with the confidential nature of these negotiations. We encourage everyone to attend future DOJ community meetings, listed below.

The D3 team was thrilled to welcome Parents Against Violence Engaged (PAVE) to our podcast and learn more about their mission! The podcast will be out soon!

The District 3 team attended the Old National Bank remembrance ceremony at the Mayor's Office. April 10th marked one year since that terrible day in Louisville. We were honored to attend, hear the powerful speeches, and listen to the song by The Warriors of Praise and the Sankofa Players.

3DAB Meeting: April 22nd!

Our next District Advisory Board Meeting will be on Monday, April 22nd at 1875 Farnsley Road at 6pm. We look to seeing you there! Special thanks to Dr. Pope  for allowing us to visit the St. Stephen UCC/New Century Fellowship Church for this meeting!

Medical Minute: Whiskey Fungus

We are so grateful to the University of Louisville Medical School Environmental Health Club for working with us to provide more information about whiskey fungus. Please see their comments:

What is it? Whiskey fungus is a fungus that feeds on the sugar in ethanol emissions, which come from distilleries! The amount of ethanol in those emissions can be anywhere from 200 to 1000 tons per year.

Is it dangerous?

  • Don’t worry, it is not nearly as dangerous as black mold, which is what whiskey fungus can look like.
  • There are no known health hazards to whiskey fungus – but it sure doesn’t look pretty! If you plan on removing it from any surface, health organizations recommend that you wear personal protective equipment (masks, goggles and gloves).

How to remove Whiskey Fungus?

  • Recommended methods include power-washing – especially for cars, sides of houses, etc.
  • If you can’t get your hands on a power-washer (those can be hard to come by), here are some products that work well:
    • Citra-Shield
    • Homemade solutions (for smaller surfaces) include vinegar and baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and lemon juice.
