LMAS Shelter Hits Max Capacity: Announces FREE Adoptions

a

Louisville Metro Animal Services (LMAS) announced this week that the shelter is operating at maximum capacity and is taking proactive steps to reduce the kennel population by waiving adoption fees for all dogs and cats, and waiving redemption fees for all unclaimed pets. As the city’s only open admission shelter for stray animals, LMAS has taken in 850 more animals this year compared to last year.

“We’re asking the public to help us remain a shelter that doesn’t euthanize homeless pets simply because we are out of room,” said Ashley Book, interim shelter director. “Right now, our priority is reuniting stray pets and their owners, and finding homes for the high number of adoptable shelter dogs and cats sitting in our kennels. We expect a high volume of pets to be turned over to LMAS over this long holiday weekend because we know fireworks and pets do not mix well.”

The shelter is requesting help from adopters, fosters, rescue partners, rescue organizations, and is waiving all adoption fees. All adoptable pets have been vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped, and spayed or neutered. Fostering helps free up kennel space, and the shelter is seeking both new and existing fosters.

“LMAS has worked very hard to maintain its status as a No Kill Shelter for time and space. We’re asking owners who are searching for a missing pet to visit the shelter. If you are planning to add a new four-legged friend to your family, make Animal House Adoption Center your first stop,” said Book.

Approved adopters can also foster-to-adopt select adoptable dogs. Adoption fees are waived but there is still a review and approval process. Jefferson County residents must also purchase a one-year, renewable pet license - a requirement of the Louisville Animal Ordinance. LMAS’ Animal House Adoption Center is located at 3516 Newburg Road. Walk-ins are welcome from 12-6 p.m. daily.

Cooper Chapel Road Extension Project From Beulah Church Road to Bardstown Road

a

The project involves the design and construction of Cooper Chapel Road from Beulah Church Road to Bardstown Road. The design includes 2 driving lanes with a raised median, bike lanes, sidewalks, and a shared use path. The project-length is approximately 3 miles.

General Information:

- The preliminary design is 100% complete.

- Final design for right-of-way plans is 100% complete. Final design for structural plans is in progress.

- Delays to the purchase of right-of-way were experienced with the discovery of Kentucky Glade Cress (identified as a threatened species in 2014) along the proposed alignment of Cooper Chapel Road. A mitigation strategy for the Kentucky Glade Cress was developed and is being implemented.

- Right-of-way acquisition is in progress and is anticipated to be complete in the fall of 2023. Once all properties are clear, utility relocation and construction are anticipated to begin in the fall of 2024.

Protect Yourself Against Scams With These July Tips

a
  1. BBB continues to receive reports from consumers regarding employment offers from Navis Worldwide. This is a reshipping scam. If you see any work-from-home job listings that involve receiving other people’s packages or mail directly to your home, report the listing to BBB at bbb.org/scamtracker

  1. BBB warns of employment scams that take place over messaging apps. If a “recruiter” contacts you and asks you to download a messaging app such as Telegram, be very wary. Victims have been scammed by fake recruiters who claim to need their personal and financial information for new hire paperwork; these victims then have their identities stolen. Research any job offer first, be careful with your personal information, and beware of “easy hires” – companies who want to hire you without meeting you or conducting a job interview.

  1. A consumer reported receiving an email with a fake invoice for Best Buy’s Geek Squad. The consumer contacted Best Buy directly, who confirmed the email was fraudulent. If you receive an unexpected invoice via email, do not click on any links. Contact the company directly to verify the email/invoice.

  1. A consumer received a cashier’s check in connection with a new job and was instructed to cash the check and send a portion to a third party. This is a fake check scam. Be wary of any new job opportunity that sends you a cashier’s check with instructions to send part of the money to someone else; the check is likely fraudulent.

  1. BBB has received reports of more puppy scams in the area. When buying a new pet, make sure you see the animal in person first, check the breeder’s credentials and references, and only pay with a secured method such as a credit card. Adopting from an accredited charity is also an excellent way to find your next pet!

  1. BBB received a report from a consumer who encountered a vanity award scam. Vanity award scams attempt to get victims to pay a fee to receive their award, trophy, plaque, etc. Before accepting an award, research the company offering it, know the nomination process, and check for any payment requirements.

  1. Consumers continue to report receiving fake Publisher’s Clearing House phone calls. The real Publisher’s Clearing House only notifies their winners by mail, not by phone. Any “sweepstakes organization” that asks for money upfront to claim a grand prize is very likely a scam.

  1. A local consumer was recently the victim of a romance scam, losing hundreds of dollars to a potential online suitor who claimed to encounter financial emergencies. When it comes to online dating, don’t send money or personal information to anyone you haven’t met in person, and never give someone your credit card information to book a plane ticket to visit you.

  1. BBB warns of a Facebook Marketplace scam. Consumers report that when selling big ticket items on Facebook Marketplace, they have been contacted by buyers who offer to pay by a payment app, but first the seller needs to upgrade their account to a “business account” in order to accept the transfer. This is a scam that actually attempts to trick the seller into sending the buyer money.

  1. Scammers are using deepfake technology to create videos that convince victims to hand over large amounts of money. The latest scam looks like business mogul Elon Musk endorsing an investment plan. The video is fake, and the investment is a scam. Don’t fall for it!

Solar Over Louisville Deadline Extended Through August 14

a

Louisville Metro Government and the Louisville Sustainability Council (LSC) today announced that the deadline to apply for the discounted solar installation program Solar Over Louisville has been extended through Sunday, August 14.

To date, more than 1,000 people have expressed interest in going solar, and SES has signed nearly 50 contracts with local property owners – a record for solarize campaigns in the region. The first solar installation took place on June 3 and seven installations are currently in progress.

Solar Over Louisville gives residents and small businesses in Louisville and surrounding counties the opportunity to obtain discounted wholesale rates for solar installation through SES, the campaign’s vetted installer. SES will continue to offer 12% to 19% discounts for participants that sign up through this program; the discount rate will depend on the size of the installation.

Rooftop solar has the potential to reduce energy costs while reducing emissions of the greenhouse gases responsible for climate change. Residential buildings account for 27.4% of the city’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Visit www.100percentlou.com/2040 to learn more about Solar Over Louisville and sign up before the deadline. You can also sign up for this Solar Over Louisville workshop:
