Dear Neighbor,
Over the past two years, it is hard to remember a true holiday weekend - let alone a weekend anyone looked forward to celebrating. Thankfully, this Memorial Day Weekend seems steeped in the normalcy of summer, something I think we all are looking forward to.
Let us not forget the solemn reason for this holiday - the brave American men and women who fought for freedom, and their ultimate sacrifice for us.
There are many around the world fighting those same battles for freedom, both on and off the battlefield. Even in non-violence many risk their lives for liberty. Our American tradition is certainly unique, but we are not alone in wanting liberty for ourselves, our families, and our communities. That should be celebrated wherever we find it.
I truly believe those who gave that "last full measure of devotion," would be very proud of who we are as a people and a nation today. When Lincoln said those immortal words when dedicating a cemetery in Gettysburg, PA in 1863, not even he could imagine the challenges we would face and how we - the Americans - would overcome those challenges together.
Even with our faults, flaws, disagreements, and imperfections, we hold values dear and independence even dearer. Let us honor the sacrifice and memory of our Heroes by doing what we can to make ourselves and our nation better each day.
Have a good weekend,
Councilman Brent Ackerson Louisville Metro Council, District 26
There will be no residential garbage, recycling, yard waste or bulky waste collection within the Louisville Metro Urban Services District (former Louisville city limits) on Memorial Day, Monday, May 30. Collection through the week will be delayed by one day because of the holiday. To receive automatic reminders of changes due to holidays, download the Recycle Coach app at the App Store or on Google Play.
Waste and recycling pickup in St. Matthews will also be delayed because of the holiday.
Other 26th District residents who rely on private waste haulers for garbage, recycling and yard waste collection should consult those haulers about holiday collection schedules.
Also, Metro’s three staffed recycling drop-off locations, the Waste Reduction Center, and the Haz Bin hazardous waste disposal site, will be closed on Saturday, May 28, in recognition of the holiday and closed on Monday as usual. A map and complete list of the drop-off sites and regular operating hours can be found on the SWMS website.
