Statement on the Mayor's 2022-23 Budget Proposal
In 2016, Metro Council made a promise to the people of Louisville to bring all roads in our city to an 'above average' rating within a decade. We put extra money behind that promise. So far, we have kept that promise by appropriating additional funds each year for additional road work -- even when the budget was lean.
Now, over 70% on our way to that goal, the administration has put the brakes on that promise. The Mayor's budget proposal, released today, includes only 67% of the funds needed to keep our commitment to better roads in this city. This is despite a 100% ($176MM) increase in capital budget expenditures and 9% ($57MM) increase in the General Fund Budget.
It's a shame to see our Mayor break a promise like this as he's headed out the door. It will be even more shameful if my Metro Council colleagues do not restore this important funding. I will do everything I can to keep our promise to the people of Louisville.
