District 12 was proud to honor Kevin Wooden during the Metro Council Black History Month Program. Mr. Wooden is a long-time mentor for SPAVA (Society for the Prevention of Aggressiveness and Violence Among Adolescents). He works with youth on how to better themselves, obtain life skills, and prevent violence and crime. He has volunteered in this role since the early 1990’s. He worked for the United States Post Office as a Mail Carrier until retirement, allowing him more time to be a SPAVA mentor, as well as a volunteer for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates).
For the first semester of the 2021-22 school year Mr. Wooden mentored at Shacklette Elementary in District 12 working with all the students in grades 2 through 5. SPAVA, as well as Shacklette Elementary, feel fortunate that Kevin was able to devote so much of his time, and his passion for making a difference, to the students in our community. His excitement, energy and true commitment for what he does are evident by the fact that Mr. Wooden is known as a “rock star” at Shacklette. He not only volunteers as a SPAVA mentor, but often stays and has lunch with his students showing them how important they are. These feelings of encouragement and respect are so critical in a young person’s life and are leaving a lasting impact. He is an individual who takes his position as a role model to the youth of our community seriously and we were extremely proud to honor him.

Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee, rumble young Bumbles, rumble. Bumbles is actually a lover, not a fighter. With the help of staff, the approximately one-year-old Pit Bull has gone from 'nervous nelly' to confident lovebug; she's still timid by nature but no longer fearful of new people. Winning her over is easy because she's food motivated and loves stinky treats. Bumbles isn't big on toys and games, but she loves going for long walks. Bumbles gets along great with other dogs during group play sessions, so would be totally cool with a canine sibling. Bumbles’ adoption fee is waived for an approved adopter, thanks to the Pay It Forward Adoption Program. Bumble weighs 64 lbs. She's already microchipped, spayed, and up-to-date on vaccinations. To meet or adopt Bumbles, visit Animal House Adoption Center, open 12:00-6:00pm daily. For more info about Bumbles, send an email to animalservicesadoption@louisvilleky.gov.
