Louisville Water addresses concerns regarding PFAS
"Louisville Water is in the business of public health and we take this responsibility seriously. Louisville Water is among the highest quality drinking water utilities in the nation. In fact, we meet all drinking water standards including the health advisory for PFAS.
Per and Polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), are a complex set of thousands of man-made chemicals first introduced in the 1950s. These PFAS chemicals can be found nearly everywhere: food, clothing, water, etc. We have been monitoring PFAS for years and we are closely watching EPA’s recommendation on how these chemicals should be regulated.
Here are the facts you should know:
- PFAS is a complex group of compounds and the EPA is presently focused on a small number of the them, two of which are PFOA and PFOS. The EPA Health Advisory (HA), is based on lifetime exposure to PFOA and PFOS in drinking water, is 70 parts per trillion (ppt). Louisville Water’s recent monitoring has detected levels of PFOA ranging from “non-detect” to 13 ppt and up to 4.8 ppt for PFOS. Our average is 4.7 for PFOAS and 2.0 for PFOS and trends show a decline in levels of both.
- There are currently no federal regulations for PFAS –only health advisories.
- Louisville Water continues its research on this issue, including monthly monitoring of PFAS to understand their occurrence and look for any patterns. Our scientist are also working with national research partners to understand treatment options.
Louisville Water acknowledges the need for a better understanding of the health risks posed by PFAS, their occurrence in the environment and sources of PFAS occurrence in water. We are committed to continuing our long tradition of leading the way. We are encouraged by discussion to reduce the proliferation of these chemicals and we are committed to meeting all standards EPA establishes for drinking water."

From the Mayor's Desk: Addressing pressing needs
Mayor Fischer and Metro Council members on Tuesday outlined a proposal to spend $262.9 million of federal American Rescue Plan (ARP) funding on critical initiatives to address public safety challenges and homelessness, build more affordable housing for the community, continue to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic, and recognize the efforts of public employees.
“It is critical that we use these federal funds to address some of our most pressing needs,” the Mayor said. “Working with Metro Council, we have identified multiple initiatives to make our city safer through our whole-of-government approach, as well as provide more temporary shelter, permanent supportive housing and affordable housing for our most vulnerable residents. In addition, we propose to use funding for Public Health to continue to address needs related to the COVID-19 pandemic, a minimal amount of funding to be used for administration of funds, as well as premium pay to public employees of Metro Government and other related government entities, who served with great distinction during unprecedented times.”

Public health literacy encourages environmental justice and progress for the people of District 3. By empowering residents to stay in the know about how public health concerns impact their community, we hope to build a cleaner, healthier district together.

Recycling Cart Update
Anyone within our waste collection service area knows that we have been rolling out new recycling carts since June 2021. Here’s the latest information about how it’s going:
Online Free Cart Request Form is closed. To help mitigate the waste container audit errors, we allowed residents to fill out a form requesting a free recycling cart if they believed they were missed during the first round of deliveries. This form was closed on September 10 at 5pm. Requests for recycling carts must now go through Metro311.
Second round of deliveries complete. On August 6, a new delivery list was created using submissions from the online Free Cart Request Form. Using this list, our contractor delivered about 2500 carts between August 9 and September 6.
A list for third round of deliveries is being compiled. Anyone who filled out the online Free Cart Request Form or submitted a request to Metro311 after August 6 will be added to a new delivery list that will be fulfilled by Metro staff and/or our contractor. These deliveries have not yet begun, and the exact timeline is to be determined. Please note, not all form submissions qualified for the grant-funded recycling cart.
We will continue to collect recycling from the small bins until January 1, 2022. Our goal is for each participating household to have a recycling cart (orange-lidded purchased previously or blue-lidded received recently) by this time. This goal depends greatly on cart inventory. We appreciate everyone’s patience as we continue this process.

Be informed about crimes with LMPD's crime mapping website
The Louisville Metro Police Department uses a Crime Mapping website to display crime on a map in Jefferson County. Zoom in to see crimes in an area, or put an address in the address bar at top left to search. You may sign up for auto email alerts for crime around an address. Reports are made available to the public after a process of internal review, often in the same day as the report taken. Due to the nature of some crimes, reports are made available to public upon the completion of a thorough investigation and will be made available as soon as practical.
Or use the crime mapping iPhone app. If you see crime occurring, please contact the Louisville Metro Police Department. Call 911 for emergencies. Call 502-574-7111 for non-emergency related help or to find a towed vehicle. Call 574-LMPD to report crime tips.
Please call the LMPD non-emergency number, instead of sending an email, if you're seeing suspicious activity in your neighborhood. Sending emails to LMPD delays response, and officers need to be dispatched for the activity. These citations continue the nuisance abatement process. The LMPD non-emergency line is 574-7111 or 574-2111
