Today, Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer announced an agreement between the City of Louisville and the Family of Breonna Taylor. The agreement, reached without the consultation of the members of the Metro Council, includes payment of $12 million to the family of Breonna Taylor as well as promised changes to the policies of the Louisville Metro Police Department.
My office has received several calls, emails, and questions seeking information about this agreement. Unfortunately, like many of the actions taken by Mayor Fischer, we discovered this information shortly before it was released at a press conference. A copy of the agreement has not been released as of the time in which this was written.
I want to be clear: Metro Council doesn’t have the authority to amend or change this agreement, nor have we been involved in any aspect of the settlement. I can report that there is significant interest in forcing the Mayor to release all details related to this agreement in addition to the details related to actions taken leading up to and following the death of Ms. Taylor.
Tomorrow, the Metro Council will hold a four-hour hearing with the Mayor’s Chief of Public Safety, Ms. Amy Hess and potentially Interim LMPD Police Chief Robert Schroeder. This hearing was delayed by the Mayor’s attempts to prevent the Metro Council’s effort to investigate his administrations actions over the course of the past seven months. The hearing is taking place after Judge Audra Eckerle ruled in favor of the Council to seek information through subpoenas. This hearing along with a vote of no-confidence in the Mayor’s leadership are two items on the Metro Council’s agenda for this week.
Advancing calls for justice isn’t just about changing policies and resolving financial settlements. Achieving justice is about knowing the truth and holding persons accountable for their actions. This administration let our community down with its failure to take action in advance of March 2020 when scandal after scandal made obvious the need for change within Louisville Metro Government.
I am committed to getting the answers you deserve, and I will keep you updated as further information becomes available.
