Carmel will host first annual Diwali Festival
CARMEL, Ind., Oct. 8, 2024 - The City of Carmel and its Diwali Committee will host the inaugural Diwali Festival on Saturday, Oct. 26 from 5 - 8 p.m. in Midtown Plaza. Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is one of the most popular festivals in India. It symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. The festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm and joy, featuring vibrant decorations, the lighting of lamps and the sharing of sweets among family and friends.
“Diwali is a wonderful opportunity for our community to come together and celebrate the rich cultural diversity that makes Carmel so special,” said Carmel Mayor Sue Finkam. “I am proud to support the efforts of the Diwali Committee and look forward to a spectacular celebration.”
The public is invited to gather in Midtown Plaza for Diwali musical and dance performances, traditional food from local Indian vendors, cold spark fireworks and giveaway ceramic tealights called diyas.
In September, the city announced the formation of a Diwali Committee, bringing together a diverse range of organizations from the Indian community to plan the city's inaugural celebration. The committee is chaired by Carmel City Councilor Dr. Anita Joshi and reflects the city’s commitment to celebrating cultural diversity and inclusion.
