'Big Dance' ends this weekend, but it began in Carmel at Hotel Carmichael |
|
As we enter into the final weekend of the NCAA Tournament, we are proud to reveal that the NCAA Selection Committee – the group of athletic officials charged with creating the 68-team brackets for both the Men’s and Women’s tournaments – established their headquarters at Hotel Carmichael in Carmel’s City Center.
A much-guarded secret until now, the NCAA has granted permission to share the news that the Selection Committee spent the days leading up to “Selection Sunday” at the Carmichael, where they took over the third floor of the hotel for their rooms and conducted their meetings at the Cole Porter Ballroom – including on Sunday when they chose the teams that would be part of the final bracket. Due to safety and security concerns, the event spaces were not publicized in advance and were kept under tight security.
According to hotel officials, the NCAA chose the Carmel location because they wanted to be within walking distance of the many restaurants located in City Center, Midtown and the Arts & Design District. Fitness concerns were also part of the equation and the Monon Greenway was another great selling point for this location.
“This is yet another feather in the cap for our City Center and Hotel Carmichael, which has established itself as a premier place for weddings, business gatherings, small conventions and now, a major national NCAA function that drew the eyes of the nation to Carmel, Indiana on a very special weekend for sports fans,” said Mayor Jim Brainard.

Butts has moved her way up in the department. She started as a firefighter, then an engineer, then a paramedic and now she’s the public education officer. In that role, she teaches kids how to react in an emergency and acts as a role model. “I have direct access to all the kids about these things and if I happen to be a role model for girls then that's great.”

Construction Reminders
Range Line Road reconstruction project is underway
The long-awaited reconstruction of South Range Line Road – from Carmel Drive to 116th Street – began on Monday, March 14. The project includes the removal of traffic signals and construction of two new roundabouts, enhanced pedestrian connectivity and safety along with a beautifully- landscaped median. Unlike other sections of Range Line Road to the north, the City will maintain two lanes of traffic in each direction, due to the multiple businesses located on both sides of the street.
Click here for the complete news release.
1st Avenue NW - On or after April 4, there will be utility work taking place for about five days between 1st Street NW and 2nd Street NW. This will result in a full closure of the road, open to local traffic only. Access to the parking garage at Sophia Square will be maintained.
Range Line Road & Main Street - On or after April 4, utility work will be taking place on Range Line between Main Street and 1st Street. This will result in a full closure for five days.
Main Street & Veterans Way - The City's ongoing project to bury transmission lines is almost complete at this intersection. Main Street is open for parking but no vehicular through traffic.
Monon Greenway Reconstruction - There is ongoing construction on the Monon from City Center Drive to Carmel Drive. This work has an expected completion date of November 2022.
As a reminder, as we enter the warmer months, construction season will be in full swing. Please rememeber to allow for extra travel time, be respectful of contractors in the construction areas and remember that there are always multiple routes to travel in addition to the recommended detour routes.
