Oswego Update January 11: Prepare for snow & freezing temperatures, MLK holiday and Lake Michigan water
Village of Oswego sent this bulletin at 01/11/2024 07:00 PM CST
Village offices closed January 15
In observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 15, Village offices will be closed. Garbage collection is unaffected. Our Public Works and Police Department staff will remain on duty to keep our Village safe.
Incoming inclement weather
Due to the incoming winter storm, Friday's waste collection will start early at 5 a.m. Please keep garbage and recycling cans off the street and secure them in a safe area since high winds are expected.
More than 2 inches of snow is forecasted, and we need your cooperation to NOT park on streets. This allows our Public Works crews plenty of room to salt and plow, as well as access for emergency vehicles. Don't shovel or blow snow into the streets. Be a good neighbor and shovel your sidewalks and areas around fire hydrants. Get information on salting and snow removal: oswegoil.org/snow.
Check the weather forecast before you hit the roads and limit any unnecessary travel. Stay safe, Oswego!
Falling temps = frozen pipes
As temperatures plummet, follow these tips to avoid frozen water pipes this winter.
Turn on your faucet to allow a small drip, preferably from a faucet on an outside wall. Open cabinets beneath sinks to allow warm air to flow.
If your pipes freeze, never try to thaw a pipe with a torch or other open flame because it causes a fire hazard.
If your water pipes burst, turn off the water at the main shutoff valve and call a plumber for assistance.
If you're leaving town, ask a friend or neighbor to check your house daily to make sure it’s warm enough to prevent freezing.
Sip, chat and connect

Beyond the faucet
Attend our open house on the new water source from 5 to 7 p.m. on January 17 at Village Hall, 100 Parkers Mill in Oswego.
Elected officials and staff will be available to discuss the connection to Lake Michigan water in 2027, as well as new utility rates. If you would like more information on how your utility bill will be affected, bring in your summer 2023 bill.
