Dear Neighbors,
|
As summer winds down, it's hard to let it go as the year eases into autumn.
So it was a good time to get out and enjoy things like marching in the Grayslake Summer Days parade, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. It was heartening to see so many neighbors out celebrating the last days of summer.
I was thrilled that Congress passed -- and President Biden signed -- the PACT Act, which will provide health care to vets exposed to burn pits and other toxins while on duty. Our county board legislative committee, which I chair, supported this legislation. We also received strong backing from our Veterans Assistance Commission of Lake County.
Sadly, I knew a vet who took his life in the past year. He was a committed public servant and family man. His family's loss was our loss. Without a doubt, we need to enhance our resources to save those who served our country. I'm committed to expanding our services to help those in need. If you know a vet who needs immediate confidential support, they can call the national Veterans Crisis line. To access, dial 988 and press 1. That number, I should note, is available for anyone who needs help.
Also mark your calendars for Hainesville's Civil War Event on Oct. 15 and 16. Reenactors in period costume recreate a Civil War encampment and battle in a rural setting. Event highlights include: a narrated military battle between union and confederate uniformed military forces; military and civilian bivouacs.
Since this a great time to be outside, don't forget it's Hike Lake County time. If you walk the equivalent of seven trails, you can get a free zipper pull or medallion for your dog. I will be hiking all of the trails, much to the delight of my dog Brogan. Please note: No pooches are allowed in Independence Grove.
As always, it's my honor and privilege to serve you. I am available to speak before any civic, faith or service group. You can contact me at jwasik@lakecountyil.gov.

Save the Pipes! Don’t Flush Wipes
Did you know products that are labeled "flushable" can lead to clogs, costly repairs to our sewer infrastructure and can negatively impact the sewer systems around your home and neighborhood?
Just because a product is marked 'flushable' does not mean that it can be flushed because they do not degrade like toilet paper and can end up clogging pipes. Only toilet paper and human waste should be flushed. All other products should be properly disposed.
