Evanston Police Arrest Man For Unlawful Possession of a Firearm By a Repeat Offender
EVANSTON, IL — On June 26, 2025, at approximately 11:31 p.m., Evanston Police officers responded to a report of a domestic disturbance in the 1400 block of Brown Ave.
While en-route to the location, officers were informed that an involved male party had been standing outside. Although he was no longer in view, that individual was now possibly inside of his vehicle which was parked near the location of the call.
Upon arrival, officers located a 43-year-old male seated inside of a 2015 Dodge. While speaking to this individual, officers observed a black handgun in plain view on the front passenger seat. Officers ordered the male to exit the vehicle, and he subsequently complied and was placed into custody. The male was identified as Jay L. Clifton. A black Bersa S.A. Model 97, semi-automatic .380 caliber handgun was recovered from the vehicle.
Clifton was transported to the Evanston Police Department for further investigation. During an interview, he acknowledged possessing the handgun as well as his belief that it was in a properly functioning state. The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office reviewed the investigation and approved one felony count of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm By a Repeat Offender.
