The City of Evanston will host its 4th annual free workshop, Evanston Procurement 101, to help local businesses and contractors learn how they can do business with the city's large entities. The event aims to increase local business opportunities in Evanston.
The workshop will be held on Friday, April 22, 8:30 a.m. to noon, in the Parasol Room (4th Floor) of the Lorraine H. Morton Civic Center, 2100 Ridge Ave. Registration will begin at 8 a.m.
Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in small table discussions with the following entities giving presentations at the event: Evanston Chamber of Commerce,City of Evanston, Northwestern University, Rotary International, Evanston/Skokie School District 65 and Evanston Township High School District 202. Participants will learn about procurement processes, anticipated projects and bidding practices.

The Center for Economic Progress will be providing free tax preparation services to individuals with incomes under $25,000 and families with incomes under $50,000 in Evanston. IRS-certified volunteers will be available to assist at the Evanston Public Library, 1703 Orrington Ave., on a first-come, first-served basis. Assistance will be available through Saturday, April 16 on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., and on Saturdays, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. I encourage all who are eligible to take advantage of this free service.
 Evanston community members are invited to honor the veterans of the Vietnam War during a joint event hosted by the Evanston Vet Center and Evanston Public Library on Saturday, April 16 beginning at 1 p.m. in the Library's Community Meeting Room.
The Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of Defense and thousands of other organizations across the country are joining together in the U.S. Vietnam War Commemoration to honor Vietnam Veterans throughout 2016, to mark the 50th anniversary of the final withdrawal of U.S. troops from Vietnam.
“Our Nation’s Vietnam War Commemoration is a long-overdue opportunity for all Americans to recognize, honor, and thank our Vietnam Veterans and their families for their service and sacrifices during one of America’s longest wars,” McDonald said in a statement to kick-off the VA’s participation.
The joint event at the Evanston Public Library will feature speakers, including Cook County Commissioner and Veteran Larry Suffredin.
Vietnam Veterans in attendance will be individually recognized with a commemorative pin. Refreshments will be provided.

Join
your friends and neighbors for the City's annual “Clean up, Evanston!"
event on Sat., April 23, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.! Community groups and
individuals of all ages can sign up to volunteer at more than 20 clean-up sites
across the city, or organize their own local park clean-up.
The City of Evanston Streets and Sanitation Division offers FREE removal of six cubic yards of bulk garbage twice per year.
All trash must be out
by 7 a.m.; City crews will not return for late set outs. If crews are unable to
complete routes on Friday, collection will continue on Saturday.
Residents with larger
debris removal needs can call 311 or 847-448-4311 to request a
special pick-up. This alternative involves a charge. Click here for information on bulk trash pick up guidelines.
 Evanston community members are invited to celebrate Older Americans Month with the 18th annual Aging Well Conference and Film Night on Thursday, May 5 and Friday, May 6.
Aging Well Conference The Aging Well Conference will be held on Friday, May 6, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at The Merion, located at 1611 Chicago Ave., in Evanston. The free, half-day conference includes an array of educational workshops on topics covering health, wellness, care giving, technology, financial planning, nutrition and the arts for seniors and those who care for them.
The conference will include a continental breakfast, welcoming remarks by Evanston Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl, two workshop sessions, and an intergenerational performance by the Youth & Senior Theatre Ensemble Project (YSTEP), including a short play featuring Alexis Harris and Joyce Childress, written and directed by Tim Rhoze. Conference attendees must pre-register for workshops by visiting cityofevanston.org/agingwellconference or calling Services for Adults Staying in Their Homes (SASI) at 847-864-7274.
Aging Well Film Night The Aging Well Film Night will be held on Thursday, May 5, 7 p.m., at the Evanston Public Library, 1703 Orrington Ave. Admission is free and registration is not necessary; however, seating will be limited.

 Community members are invited to take a look inside the Evanston Water Treatment Facility, 555 Lincoln St., on Saturday, May 7. The City of Evanston’s Water Production Bureau will provide two tours on a first-come, first-served basis. These tours are limited to 30 people and are only open to Evanston residents.
The first tour will be given from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. for adults and children 15 years or older. A second "child-friendly" tour will follow from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for residents with children age 6 years or older. Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. All adults will be required to provide photo identification upon checking in.
To register, please call 847-448-8198 or email water@cityofevanston.org by Wednesday, May 4. All interested participants must provide their name, address, contact number and names of the individuals attending in their group. Registrations will not be accepted at the door.
Parking will be available in the facility's gated parking lot accessible via the driveway on the north side of Lincoln Street between the two buildings. Please arrive at the facility 20 minutes before the tour start time, as the tours will start promptly at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. and admittance to the facility will not be permitted once the tours have started.
