2026 Tax Filing Season Begins Today for Individuals - Forms Now Available
The Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR) will begin accepting 2026 individual income tax returns today Monday, January 26, the same day the IRS opens the federal filing season. The deadline to file Illinois returns is Wednesday, April 15, 2026.
File Early and Electronically
IDOR encourages taxpayers to file electronically and choose direct deposit for faster, more secure refunds. To help ensure a smooth process:

Gather all income documents before filing, such as W-2s and 1099s

File online for greater accuracy and convenience

Submit your return early to prevent delays and speed up processing

Important USPS Postmark Changes
The USPS now uses the date of first automated processing as the postmark, not the drop-off date. If mailing your return or payment:
- Send it early
- Request a manual postmark at the post office
