Ward and City Updates
Dear 7th Ward Neighbors,
It is an exciting time to be a resident of Des Plaines! Like many of you, I had a fantastic time at the Taste of Des Plaines this past weekend. City staff would love to hear what you thought of the event. Please take a moment to complete a quick survey and share your feedback.
Looking ahead, even more community fun is coming up. Be sure to check out the upcoming Community Fireworks and Independence Day Parade. You will find full details included below.
I also want to highlight an important opportunity to help shape the future of our city. On June 26, the City will host CDBG Day, which includes:
These federal funds support local improvements, affordable housing, and services for residents with low and moderate incomes. This is a chance to learn more and to share your ideas about how these resources should be used in our neighborhoods.
I encourage you to attend, get involved, and make your voice heard. Thank you for helping make Des Plaines a stronger community for everyone.
Sincerely,
Patsy Smith, 7th Ward Alderman
Taste of Des Plaines Survey
Thank you to everyone who came out to the Taste of Des Plaines this past weekend! It was wonderful to see so many neighbors enjoying live music, delicious food from local restaurants, and family-friendly fun right here in our community. The Taste is truly a special event that brings us all together.
City event organizers are seeking feedback to help improve future festivals, and I’m happy to share their survey with you. Your thoughts on the food, entertainment, and overall atmosphere will help them understand what worked well and what can be improved for next time. There’s also space to share any other comments or suggestions you might have. Your input will help make future events even more enjoyable for everyone in Des Plaines.

Independence Day Celebrations
While the Taste of Des Plaines has wrapped up, there is still plenty to look forward to this summer.
As in years past, the City of Des Plaines is hosting two longtime Independence Day traditions. The Community Fireworks Show will take place on Sunday, June 29, at Oakton College. Residents are invited to bring lawn chairs or blankets, enjoy yard games and music from a DJ, and stay for the fireworks display after dark.
Then on Friday, July 4, the City’s annual Independence Day Parade will begin at 10 a.m. at Center Street and Wicke Avenue. This year’s parade theme is “Hometown Happiness,” highlighting the spirit and pride that make Des Plaines a great place to call home.
CDBG Day Set for Thursday, June 26
The evening begins with a Fair Housing Workshop from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. hosted by the City in partnership with Open Communities. This workshop will cover your rights under fair housing laws and provide guidance on recognizing and addressing housing discrimination.
Immediately following the workshop, the City will hold a public hearing on the draft Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Consolidated Plan and Annual Action Plan. This plan outlines how federal CDBG funding will be used over the next five years to support housing, infrastructure, and services for low- and moderate-income residents in Des Plaines.
Both events will take place in Room 102 at Des Plaines City Hall (1420 Miner Street). I encourage you to attend, learn more, and share your thoughts on how these important resources can best serve our community.
