Update: Nettleton Gulch Fire  7/3/2025

Location: In Nettleton Gulch, south of Canfield Butte, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho
Incident Command: North Idaho Type 3 Incident Management Team, Mike McManus, I.C.
Estimated Size: 23 acres                                              Containment: 50%                                                                             Total Personnel: 90
Resources on Scene: 4 engines, 4 hand crews, and 4 water tenders, with 2 Type 1 Helicopters available as needed.

The Nettleton Gulch Fire is 50% contained, with forward progression stopped. Wednesday’s operations included mitigating snag risks along the fire, which has allowed for safer access to the fire edge. With safer access, the fire line was walked again yesterday with mapping tools, and the acreage was updated to 23 acres. Crews are in the mop-up phase, working in from the fire’s edge to extinguish remaining hot spots with water and hand tools. Demobilization of personnel and excess equipment backhaul will begin today as mop up continues. Crews will continue to monitor the weather for possible gusty winds through the end of today.

Our priority continues to be public and firefighter safety. A Temporary Flight Restriction is in place and remains in effect over the Canfield Mountain area. Unauthorized drones and aircraft pose a serious hazard to firefighting and law enforcement activities. If you fly, we can’t.

The holiday weekend will bring increased traffic to our local lakes and rivers. For your safety and the safety of our crews, please give the right of way to firefighting aircraft and helicopters dipping water from area waterways. Stay clear of all operations and maintain a safe distance at all times.

The fire is on Forest Service land and under IDL protection. All Forest Service lands, roads, and trails west of Fernan Road (FSR 268), all FS lands, roads, and trails west of FSR 1525 and south of Yellow Banks Creek, and all FS lands roads, and trails south of Hayden Lake are closed for firefighter safety and access.  The closure does not include FSR 268 or 1535.

The Nettleton Gulch fire was reported on June 29, 2025, near the popular recreation area, Canfield Mountain, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. All wildfires under IDL protection are investigated. This investigation is being led by the Idaho State Fire Marshal’s Office, in partnership with IDL and ATF.

There is a law enforcement incident investigation happening at the fire’s location. All questions regarding the law enforcement investigation should be directed to the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Department. Their contact is Lt. Mark Ellis, PIO cell: 208-758-1045, email: sopio@kcgov.us.
