Continued progress toward full containment on Steelhead and Cherry Fires

(Riggins, Idaho) - Full containment has been achieved on the Steelhead Fire, located approximately 12 miles north of Riggins. Fire resources are being reassigned to emerging incidents or transferred to support efforts on the Cherry Fire. An Idaho Department of Lands suppression module from northern Idaho will remain on site to monitor the area for any changes in fire behavior.

Firefighters made significant progress on the Cherry Fire yesterday, aided by rainfall and cooler temperatures. The fire perimeter has remained unchanged for several days, and containment has now reached 50%. Today, fire crews will continue to reinforce the constructed lines and mop up towards the interior in preparation for the expected rise in temperatures this weekend. An Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) equipped with infrared cameras is scheduled to fly over the fire today to detect hot spots. This information will enable firefighters to target residual heat more efficiently and effectively, preventing the ignition of unburned fuels.

Fire managers will also conduct a reconnaissance flight over both fires today to assess the suppression activities. Thanks to the quick initial attack response and the ongoing support of the Salmon River Ranger District both fires have remained on state lands.
