Hawk ID: Learning the River of Raptors

Have you ever looked up at a hawk and said, “That’s not a red-tail.” More than a dozen different kinds of hawks migrate through Iowa in the fall. This fun, fast-paced program will give you identifying field marks for different hawks in flight. Every participant will make their own field guide while the naturalist draws it on an overhead projector. Great preparation for the upcoming Hawk Watch. *Registration required

Rock Flipping River Ramble
LOCATION: Redfield Boat Ramp, Redfield DATE/TIME: Sun, Oct 2, 12:30-1:30pm
Splash through the water in your boots, waders, or sandals and learn more about the habitat of the Middle Raccoon River. We’ll turn over rocks and use nets to reveal the small critters living under the water, learn how to identify them, and discuss how these critters can teach us about the quality of the Middle Raccoon. This is a great time of year to bring a fishing pole to try your luck fishing before or after the program as well. The River Ramble is intended to be insightful and entertaining for kids and adults alike! *Registration required

Story of the Red Earth People by Meskwaki Youth
LOCATION: Kuehn Conservation Area, Earlham DATE/TIME: Sun, Oct 2, 2-5pm
The Meskwaki Youth Dance and Drum groups, along with the traditional Meskwaki Brown Otter Drum, will share the history, song, dance, drum and culture of the Red Earth People. The theme of this event is taken from the word of the Oglala Sioux Elder Black Elk, “Much can be learned by watching children at play.” Participants will have a chance to learn from the Meskwaki youth and join them in dance. This event is in lieu of the Prairie Awakening-Prairie Awoke Celebration that was canceled due to weather. T-shirts that were made for that event will be available for $20. Please bring your lawn chairs for seating in the arena. *Register to be notified of weather cancelation

High Trestle Hawk Watch
LOCATION: High Trestle Trail Bridge overlook DATE/TIME: Sat, Oct 8, 10am-4pm
Join several “hawkers” as they watch the river of raptors move south along the Des Moines River. They will be helping new and experienced birders identify the birds as they pass. Viewing will be on the west overlook on the Woodward side of the HTB. Parking is on the east side, off of QF in Boone County. A half-mile walk on level ground is required. *No registration required

Indigenous Peoples’ Day– Mounds at Kuehn
LOCATION: Kuehn Conservation Area, Earlham DATE/TIME: Sun, Oct 9, 1:30-3:30pm
DCCB invites you to recognize the National Indigenous Peoples’ Day by volunteering to work at the burial mounds site at Kuehn. We will help to create a gathering site for celebrations and programming. Participants will assist in the mulching of the mounds trail, assembly of log bench seating, and removal of trees. The program will also include a presentation on the history of the mounds and the mound-builders culture that once called Kuehn home. *Registration required
