In the September 2025 report to the Board of Education (BOE), Superintendent Keith Hayashi provided an update on the Department’s official enrollment counts for the 2025-26 school year, noting a 1% decrease from last year’s count — a trend seen mainly as a result of declining birth rates across both the state and country, as well as an increase in out-migration or families leaving the state for economic or other reasons. A statewide district optimization study is underway that will take a comprehensive look at how the Department uses school facilities in light of current and projected enrollment trends.
Progress on the Lahaina workforce housing project — a 5-acre, 47-unit rental complex located below Lahainaluna High School and above Princess Nahiʻenaʻena Elementary — was also shared. Employees are anticipated to be able to move in over spring break. Information about the project schedule, unit floor plans, rental rates and the application process and deadline is forthcoming.
Superintendent Hayashi ended his report with the recognition of the 2026 Complex Area and Charter School Teachers of the Year as well as the Association for Middle Level Education’s 2025 “Schools of Distinction.” A Farrington High School educator was honored as the state’s History Teacher of the Year and Waipahu High School’s Academic Health Center was recognized for a recent Build Hawai‘i Award.
