Aloha, HIDOE Community –
Welcome to this week’s edition of the Ho‘oha‘aheo Newsletter.
Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) Hawai‘i State Conference Students from four Career and Technical State Organizations (CTSO) representing 45 Hawai‘i public, private and postsecondary schools competed at the 2024 State CTSO Conference this week at the Hawai‘i Convention Center and partner sites including Kapi‘olani Community College, Leeward Community College and the Carpenters Training Center in Kapolei.
Approximately 1,700 students from across the state participated in a range of authentic Career and Technical Education (CTE) competitions in areas including business and marketing, retail merchandising, drone operations, robotics, health science, emergency preparedness, engineering technology and more. Community business partners were invited to judge competitions within their respective fields or industries to help ensure that the student CTE skills were in alignment with real-world industry standards.
This furthers our efforts around strengthening career and college pathways by providing relevant, real-world learning opportunities that help ensure all of our graduates are globally competitive and locally committed. Congratulations to all the competitors and good luck to those students moving on to their respective national events!
Mentorship Matters Looking back to the start of my career as a new teacher at Lehua Elementary, I remember feeling excited but also nervous and unsure. Luckily, I had a solid foundation of support from veteran peers, a retired teacher and an encouraging principal whom I consider some of my most impactful mentors. Wrapping up National Mentoring Month, the Communications Branch produced a video story highlighting why mentoring matters and the statewide impact it has in public education.

Community Query
We asked school leaders to complete the prompt below and will be featuring more in the coming weeks.
“What is your professional New Year’s resolution?”
We’re trying to really expand and develop our advisory program at the middle school. There’s an academic component and there’s a social-emotional behavioral component to it, and both sides require very different curriculum, so I’m hoping to improve those both in this next semester and throughout the next year.
Paul Zina, Principal, Kapa‘a Middle

My New Year's resolution as the proud principal of Kawānanakoa Middle School are as follows: 1) Keep on striving to develop a culture of inclusiveness and respect; 2) Take advantage of opportunities to model kindness in and outside of the classroom; and 3) Promote the mindfulness of diversity and different cultures.
Veronica Victor, Principal, Kawānanakoa Middle
