Florida’s weather can change quickly. That is why we encourage residents to follow a simple but effective habit in the summer months.
Watch the Weather. Wait to Water.
If your lawn has received enough water from rainfall, turn off the irrigation system and turn it back on when needed. It sounds easy and it is. Yet this one action can make a big difference in water conservation.
Why it matters:
- During the summer months of June, July, August and September, yards need no more than ½ to ¾ inch of water every two to three days
- Up to half of all residential water use goes toward outdoor irrigation
- Overwatering can harm grass roots, promote weeds and wash fertilizer into nearby waterways
When you avoid watering after rainfall, you help:
- Conserve water
- Lower your utility bill
- Support healthier lawns and landscapes
- Reduce runoff into rivers, lakes and springs
Before turning on your sprinkler:
-
Delay irrigation if rainfall has met your lawn’s needs
- Check the local forecast to see if rain is on the way
- Use a rain sensor or gauge or a soil moisture sensor
