The Southwest Florida Water Management District’s Governing Board officially proclaimed April as Water Conservation Month—and for good reason. April is typically one of the driest months of the year and it’s when water demand reaches its peak.
This month, join us in protecting Florida’s water resources by taking small steps that make a big impact. Here are 10 easy ways to save water inside and outside your home:
Indoors:
- Only run full loads in your washer and dishwasher.
- Use shorter wash cycles for lightly soiled laundry.
- Thaw food in the fridge or microwave—not under running water.
- Scrape dishes instead of rinsing before loading the dishwasher.
- Install high-efficiency showerheads, faucets and toilets.
OUTDOOR
- Check your home’s irrigation system for leaks (Bonus Tip below).
- Turn off your irrigation system and only water as needed.
- Don’t leave sprinklers unattended. Use a kitchen timer to remind yourself to turn off sprinklers.
- Use a hose with a shut-off nozzle when washing the car.
- Consider installing a rain barrel with a drip irrigation system for watering your landscaping. Rainwater is free and better for your plants because it doesn’t contain hard minerals.

Bonus Tip: Watch for leaks! Leaks are one of the top causes of water waste. You can check for hidden leaks using your water meter. Just follow these simple steps:
-
Make sure no water is being used.
-
Record your meter reading.
-
Wait 30 minutes (with no water use).
-
Check the reading again. If it changed, you likely have a leak.
