Unsolicited Phone Offers

Beware of calls informing you that your loan has been approved if you have not applied for a loan. The Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking (DISB) advises residents not to respond to telemarketers who contact them with unsolicited loan approvals. The offers may or may not be fraudulent but before accepting, verify if lenders are licensed to do business in the District of Columbia.  When a person feels uncomfortable, with persistent telemarketers they may also just reply: “Thank you for your offer, but I must decline, goodbye.”  Another response could be to just disconnect the line without any regrets.

If a person suspects that they are a victim of fraud, they may call the MPD Financial Crimes and Fraud Unit at 202-727-4159 or you may send an email to mpd.fraud-unit@dc.gov.

To verify lenders that are licensed in the District of Columbia, contact DISB at 202-727-8000.

For more information, you may also contact the DCOA Information and Assistance Unit at 202-724-5626.
