The D.C. Office on Aging is actively recruiting seniors, former first
responders, lead agency personnel and college students to participate in
the District of Columbia’s First Responder Training. In the event
of an emergency, disaster or catastrophe volunteers will be needed to assist vulnerable residents. Training sessions will start
promptly at 9:00 am and finish at 5:00 pm. A continental breakfast and
lunch will be provided during the training. The training will be held at
the Department of Health, 55 M Street SE, Suite 300, Washington D.C.
20003. In order to be certified, participants must complete four days of
the training modules which is offered during the months of April and
May. You must sign-up for modules 1, 2, 3, and 4; participants have the
option and flexibility of taking classes consecutively or as your
schedule permits until all modules are complete. Classes will fill
quickly, so please contact the D.C. Office on Aging, Information and

Last week another elderly pedestrian was struck and killed on Florida Avenue, NE. DCOA would like to ensure that elderly pedestrians are safe while crossing on District streets. Here are some tips that the DC Metropolitan Police Department provides for pedestrians, click here for more information.
As the District moves towards making plans for an Age-Friendly City which Mayor Vincent C. Gray announced in October, one of the priorities will be pedestrian safety. In February, a 94 year old woman was also struck and killed in a crosswalk.
The submission deadline for the Senior Transportation Services RFA is April 19. WEHTS provides quality curb-to-curb
service for District residents 60 years of age and older to essential
medical and life sustaining appointments. Operations also include
transportation to sites and activities, the Call-N-Ride taxicab voucher
program and Home Delivered Meal (HDM) Program. Federal and District of
Columbia appropriated funds are available for a single or collaborative
applicant organization to operate one or up to four transportation
